Vice President of Academic Affairs

Quinsigamond Community College (QCC) was established in 1963 to provide access to higher education to residents of Central Massachusetts. Since the early 60s, enrollment has grown from 300 to over 10,000 full and part-time day and evening students served. QCC offers over 70 associate degree and certificate career options in Business, Healthcare, Technology, Liberal Arts, and Human Services. Additionally, over 137 credit and 300 noncredit courses are offered online, as well as a wide variety of classroom non-credit courses, workshops, and seminars. Classes are provided on the main campus, and additional instructional locations in Central Massachusetts.

The Vice President of Academic Affairs is responsible for overall team leadership for the Academic Affairs unit of the college.Further, he/she is responsible for the planning and delivery of high quality instruction and academic support services and for the development of close ties with other organizational units of the college as well as with community and business leaders, professional organizations, local school systems and similar groups as appropriate to advancing the Academic Affairs vision of a 21st century community college.The Vice President of Academic Affairs reports directly to the President of the College and exercises direct supervision over the faculty and administrative staff in Academic Affairs, including Advising, Assessment and Academic Support.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Vice President of Academic Affairs is responsible for:

Academic Oversight

  • Implementing systems that assure academic integrity and promote accountability, innovation, excellence, and retention of students.
  • Developing and advancing academic curricula that meet the individual development needs and goals of students as well as the current and projected employment needs of the community.
  • Enhancing the teaching, learning, and advising processes that are able to achieve defined learning outcomes and are driven by the needs and learning styles of students.
  • Implementing and managing a system for assessment of each academic program and service and, in conjunction with the College’s shared governance process, recommending policies and practices that promote an effective learning environment as indicated by assessment.
  • Fostering teaching excellence, academic rigor, encouraging innovation and experimentation in pedagogy and course design and delivery.

Student Engagement/Success

  • Collaborating with all areas of the college to improve enrollment, retention, and student success
  • Developing programs for non-traditional students including online and hybrid program delivery.

Leadership

Serving as a member of the Executive Team, committed to:

  • Serving as an educational leader, not just a manager, functioning as part of a senior level management team that fosters pride and excellence in the institution in a humane supportive environment;
  • Ensuring that all Academic Affairs area programs, support services, resources, and systems are user friendly, supportive of the College’s mission of affordability, accessibility, and quality for all students (credit and non-credit), and are constantly assessed and revised to achieve and maintain state of the art currency;
  • Advancing the core principles of the College’s mission, vision and strategic priorities; providing leadership and opportunity in this area for all staff, setting a high standard of performance for self and staff, nurturing and supporting their achievement while modeling behavior supportive of institutional values and goals;
  • Ensuring effective communication throughout the College community.
  • Working actively with other areas of the college to ensure a spirit of college wide collaboration, collegiality, civility, and teamwork.Respects the function of dissent in an academic institution while advancing a collegial atmosphere of campus collaboration.
  • Leading and managing faculty and staff through significant change
  • Examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures to increase enrollment and student success.
  • Serving as the College’s Accreditation Liaison Officer between the New England Commission of Higher Education and the institution on a variety of matters, particularly leading the self-study and evaluation process but also serving as a source of information on the campus about accreditation and the institution’s accrediting agencies.
  • Modeling and promoting collaborative and collegial resolutions while inspiring others to come together in order to achieve common goals.

Budget and Finance

  • Leading a transparent budget development process within the Academic Affairs unit, that is built on effective and responsive communication, and that results in equitable spending plans.
  • Linking resources to planning, with appreciation for data analytics and using data to assist with decision -making to increase efficiency.
  • Participating in the creation and oversight of grants and specially funded programs.

Personnel

  • Promoting and supporting equal opportunity and affirmative action philosophy and goals, in the hiring, promoting, and evaluating of academic staff and faculty.
  • Ensuring that professional development and campus facilities development plan toaddress a rapidly changing environment as well as adapt to faculty, students and employer needs.

  • Establishing an open environment of trust and participatory visioning and management in Academic Affairs that includes all that are impacted and recognize the dignity and worth of all its members through honest, open, and responsible communication.
  • Implementing collective bargaining agreements in a fair, uniform and consistent manner.

Online Education/Technology

  • Championing technology for the classroom, labs, and administrative tasks and being supportive and creative in enhancing technology and online offerings.
  • Using data analytics, and application of information to assist in data-informed decision-making and accreditation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Earned Doctorate from an accredited institution.
  • Experience: 5-7 years of administrative experience with increasing complexity and progressively responsible duties. A successful record of overseeing multiple departments/divisions, budgets, personnel, and other administrative duties.
  • 3-5 years of teaching experience at the post-secondary level required.
  • Skills:Experience with managing staff and faculty in a collective bargaining environment, including having participated in the implementation of collective bargaining agreements and working with labor unions and faculty associations.
  • Experience in managing large multi-million-dollar budgets.
  • Proven successful work experience in diverse and multicultural communities.
  • Evidence of partnerships with K-12, higher education, as well as business and industry.
