Candidates are being sought for one Senior Assistant City Attorney position and one Assistant City Attorney I or II position, with placement dependent on qualifications.
Senior Assistant City Attorney - Transactional is responsible for overseeing all transactional (advisory) matters handled by the City Attorney’s Office, including the supervision and review of subordinate attorneys and staff. The incumbent may fill in during the absence or disability of the City Attorney. Requires a combination of education, training and experience equivalent to graduation from an American Bar Association (ABA) or California Bar Association (State Bar) accredited law school, and seven years of practice as an attorney specializing in transactional law, either at a public agency or private firm representing municipalities or other governmental bodies. Experience advising a Planning Commission and active membership in the California Bar Association are also required.
Assistant City Attorney I incumbents are generally assigned legal services ranging from routine to moderate complexity and receive a portion of their work direction, guidance, review and training from the other staff attorneys. Assistant City Attorney II incumbents generally require prior municipal legal experience and less supervision. They perform the more difficult and complex professional legal tasks involving a broad range of municipal legal issues. They also provide guidance and/or supervision to lower level attorneys and support staff as assigned and reports to the City Attorney or Senior Assistant City Attorney. Candidates must have a combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to graduation from an ABA or State Bar accredited law school AND one year of practice. Depending upon assignment, prior municipal litigation experience may be required. In addition, candidates for Assistant City Attorney II must have two years of experience equivalent to that of an Assistant City Attorney I with the City of Ventura, OR three years of practice with a public agency or a private law firm that specializes in representing municipalities or other governmental bodies and/or specializes in governmental issues such as environmental law, land use and/or CEQA. Five years of experience is preferred.
The positions in the city Attorney’s Office are designated as "at will," serving at the pleasure of the City Attorney, and are subject to discharge without cause or right of appeal.
Salary Range: The annual salary for Senior Assistant City Attorney is $135,123 to $181,066 per year, DOQ. The annual salary for the Assistant City Attorney I and II is $105,558 to $156,133 per year, DOQ. A 2.25% increase will become effective for all positions on 7/6/19. Compensation also includes an attractive benefits package.
