The Port of Oakland includes the Oakland seaport, Oakland International Airport, and 20 miles of waterfront. The Oakland seaport is among the top ten busiest container ports in the U.S.; Oakland International Airport is the fifth largest airport in California offering over 375 daily passenger and cargo flights; and the Port’s real estate includes commercial developments such as Jack London Square and hundreds of acres of public parks and conservation areas. The Port employs approximately 500 individuals and has annual revenues of approximately $381 million. Together, through Port operations and those of its tenants and users, the Port generates more than 84,000 jobs in the region. The Port of Oakland was established in 1927 and is an independent department of the City of Oakland.

The Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director and develops strategies and works to propel Port’s image and to facilitate transparency through consistent messaging and multi-media and multi-channel communication. The Director of Communications assists the Executive Director to inform Port employees and stakeholders on the state of the Port and Port organizational and business initiatives. The Director promotes the Port's mission, goals, and objectives as articulated by the Executive Director and approved by the Board of Port Commissioners.

Requires a combination of education and experience reflecting the required knowledge and skills such as graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field; PLUS seven years of professional experience in external affairs, including at least two years with full management responsibility for managing the staff and activities of an external affairs program in a governmental agency. A post baccalaureate degree and fluency in a secondary language is highly desirable. Candidates from the public and private sector are strongly encouraged to apply.
