Nurse Technician

Under supervision of the Registered Nurse and according to departmental policies and procedures and within the individual plan of care the Nurse Technician performs the role of physical and emotional care given to clients with mental illness and/or developmental delays primarily in the geriatric population. The Nurse Technician must demonstrate excellent customer service and have enthusiasm about the program and the Pine Rest organization.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides a safe and secure environment for patient and staff in both individual and group settings.
  • Collaborates with the RN and other clinical staff in day-to-day planning/development of patient programming and implementation of programs.
  • Responsible to frequently round and provide adequate food and/or hydration to patients and follow plan of care in working with patients with swallowing concerns by delivering specific feeding programs.
  • Assist patient with activities of daily living according to current level of care, and care plan as directed by RN. This may include but not limited to bathing, shaving, washing hands, styling hair, using the bathroom, incontinent care, dressing, etc.
  • Assists with lifting, turning, moving, positioning, and transporting residents into and out of beds, chairs, bathtubs, wheelchairs, lifts, etc. as needed, utilizing good body mechanics and safety precautions, including the appropriate/proper use of assistive devices and mechanical lifts.
  • Is responsible to actively participate in safety management, crisis intervention and prevention. This also may include monitoring, assessment, de-escalation, implementation of restrictive measures, and emergency psychiatric and medical care.
  • May be required to survey, document, and report all safety repair and maintenance needs.
  • May perform household duties such as cleaning and laundry.
  • Documents all relevant information and reports any immediate concerns according to departmental policies and procedures to RN or supervisor.
  • Responsible to monitor for and report to the designated staff any potential risk to patient safety that could lead to an adverse outcome.
  • May be responsible for specimen collection of urine/blood for related medical testing as directed by RN.
  • Responsible to monitor and empty bodily fluid (Colostomy, Urostomy, Foley) bags & care under the assessment and direction of RN.
  • Completes reports and paperwork as needed. This may include incident reports, infection control reports, shift reports, etc.
  • Assists in the teaching of patient/family. This may include social skills, daily living skills, and behavioral and coping techniques.
  • Responsible to role model the mission and values of the organization through appropriate social behavior and problem solving. Provides spiritual, emotional, social, mental, and physical support to patient.
  • May be responsible to actively participate in safety management, milieu management, crisis intervention and prevention. This also includes surveillance, assessment, de-escalation, implementation of restrictive measures, and emergency medical care.
  • Responsible to learn and help to accomplish treatment plans and goals of patient.
  • Assists and knowledgeable in the careful use of resources to assist patient with bodily care (mouth, peri, and skin care). Properly utilizing resources to include but not limited to equipment.
  • May perform basic office duties including but not limited to answering phones, filing, scanning and uploading, using Microsoft Word, etc.
  • Supports and demonstrates a customer friendly approach in accordance with performance improvement.
  • Maintain a safe environment during visiting hours by following visiting process for check in and out, and supervision of visitation.
  • Involved in training new staff.
  • May be responsible to support and promote a recovery focused environment and patient-centered approach within the program.

  • Must role model the mission and values of the organization, presenting a professional image that is projected in appearance, attitudes and behaviors, time management and communication skills. Provides spiritual, emotional, social, mental and physical support to patient.
  • Responsible of obtaining the necessity of knowledge of medications required by their position.
  • Responsible to uphold the healing ministry of Christ through relationships that honor integrity, stewardship, empowerment, the promotion of diversity, equity, inclusion, and professional excellence.
  • Must maintain annual training and demonstrate competency in the required programmatic training.
  • Performs other duties or functions as assigned.

Required/Desired Qualifications:

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Completion of a minimum of one year post high school education in behavioral sciences or equivalent is desired.
  • CNA certification - Required
  • One to two years of college education is preferred.

Specific skills, knowledge, and abilities:

  • Ability to provide care/service within the scope of: Holding a conviction to express Christ’s love and compassion to recipients of services, coworkers, and surrounding communities through integrity, stewardship, empowerment, the promotion of diversity, equity, inclusion, and professional excellence.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate skills for communicating with individuals of all ages, especially the geriatric population
  • Knowledge of dementia related behaviors and care techniques; able to apply knowledge to effectively handle these behaviors.
  • Knowledge and/or use of resources used to assist geriatric population with care (i.e., lifts, mats, gait belts, etc.)
  • Ability to provide care/service within the scope of: Holding a conviction to express Christ’s love and compassion to recipients of services, coworkers, and surrounding communities through integrity, stewardship, empowerment, the promotion of diversity, and professional excellence.
  • Ability to provide culturally inclusive care with a wide range of individuals in a diverse community setting.
  • Requires physical and emotional stamina to deal with physical, emotional, social, mental and spiritual needs of patient.
