HVAC Engineer — Building Systems Consulting

Base salary: $85,000–$130,000 (DOE)

An established building systems engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced HVAC Engineer to lead and deliver mechanical design work across a diverse portfolio of projects in the San Francisco Bay Area. This role is well-suited for a consulting-side mechanical engineer who is ready to take ownership of HVAC scopes, guide small project teams, and contribute to technically rigorous, constructible solutions.

Projects range from small commercial facilities to large, complex environments supporting sophisticated building systems. Most site visits are local and completed as day trips.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of HVAC systems, including equipment selection, layout, and specifications

  • Perform detailed load calculations and energy analysis

  • Produce coordinated construction documents and technical specifications

  • Coordinate closely with electrical, plumbing, and other engineering disciplines

  • Manage HVAC scopes across multiple projects, ensuring schedules, quality, and deliverables are met

  • Begin leading small project teams, assigning tasks and supporting timely execution

  • Track project progress and adjust plans to meet client and project goals

  • Participate in internal technical knowledge-sharing and professional development

  • Maintain awareness of applicable codes, standards, and best practices

  • Pursue and maintain professional licensure, as appropriate

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline

  • 5+ years of experience in a building systems or MEP consulting environment

  • Demonstrated ability to lead HVAC design efforts and manage project responsibilities

  • Strong technical foundation in HVAC systems, codes, and energy performance

  • Clear, professional communication skills and comfort working client-facing

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; licensure-in-progress considered

  • Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area
