Our client is seeking a  Lab Director with strong communication, leadership, and analytical skills to work with a fun and dynamic team in the exciting and fast-paced cannabis industry. The role of Lab Director is extremely important and requires a multi-faceted skill set. The successful candidate is responsible to plan, organize, and direct the overall operation to the highest standards of quality for chemical, microscopic, bacterial tests, ensuring that our clients receive the most accurate analysis and interpretation of data. The Lab Director will work closely with the Senior Lab Manager, Customers, Lab Technicians, Lab Analysts and Customer Experience Specialists to ensure optimization of operations and efficiency at the lab. The ability to work across a variety of tasks, in a startup environment, is an essential attribute for the successful candidate.

The Lab Director will manage implementation, monitoring and performance calibration of all lab equipment by establishing and ensuring consistent standards of use, and also implement lab equipment troubleshooting procedures, training and usage compliance. The ideal candidate also will have experience with the laboratory testing of cannabis products. The Lab Director will be expected to work across a variety of tasks with attention to detail, organization, and professionalism.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate the ability to provide effective direction over the operation of the laboratory
  • Position company at the forefront of Cannabis Analytical Laboratories
  • Work with Laboratory Technicians and Laboratory Analysts to ensure turnaround times are met
  • Consider and address any deficiencies found in other areas, such as facility administration; proficiency testing; and general, pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic systems
  • Ensure that all delegated duties are properly performed
  • Ensure Laboratory compliance with all necessary regulations
  • Committed to stay constantly available to the laboratory and laboratory staff
  • Manage instrument calibrations, maintenance and address any equipment malfunction or failure
  • Partner with the Senior Lab Manager, lab staff, customers and more to build on lab practices and improve laboratory operations
  • Provide guidance on analysis of data, and report preparation for the testing/screening for cannabinoid potency, terpene potency, residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, microbiology analysis, water activity, and mycotoxins
  • Learn and execute established Carbon5 Labs and state regulatory SOP’s
  • As assigned, assist with the upkeep and improvement of elements of the quality management system such as SOP’s and the training program
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Perform other laboratory and clerical duties such as data entry, filing, or supply inventory and assumption of other responsibilities on an as-needed basis, or as delegated
  • Ensure projects are successfully completed based on project requirements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Candidate must meet all state requirements for employment in the cannabis industry
  • a Master’s or Doctorate in the chemical or microbiological sciences from a college or university accredited by a national or regional certifying authority with a minimum of two years' post-degree laboratory experience or a bachelor's degree in the chemical or microbiological sciences from a college or university accredited by a national or regional certifying authority with a minimum of five years of post-education laboratory experience.
  • 2 years’ experience analyzing data acquired from instruments such as HPLC, UPLC, GCMS, ICPMS and/or instruments used to detect and quantify pathogens
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar position
  • Cannabis industry experience highly desirable
  • Well-versed in laboratory operations (analytical, chemical, biological, or both)
  • Ability to think critically
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced setting, multitask, and prioritize assignments
  • Previous experience with Lab Information Management systems
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to build a strong team
  • Creative, analytical problem-solver who can cooperatively work effectively with colleagues
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • The ability to adapt to rapid changes and utilize newly-emergent technological solutions
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Effective communication skills (both verbal and written command) with excellent computer, typing, and organizational abilities
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced setting, multitask, and prioritize and manage assignments
  • Positive attitude and willingness to work in a collaborative environment
  • Personal integrity, disciplined work ethic, organization skills, and motivation to work with a sense of urgency
  • Willingness to travel throughout the United States on an as-needed basis
  • Willingness to work occasional weekends and after-hours for business meetings, trade shows, events and presentations
