Job Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented Senior Workers' Compensation Underwriter specializing in the trucking and transportation industry. This role is responsible for evaluating, underwriting, and managing complex workers' compensation risks for commercial trucking operations. The ideal candidate will possess extensive industry knowledge, strong analytical skills, and the ability to assess risk effectively while ensuring profitability and compliance with company underwriting guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review, evaluate, and underwrite new and renewal workers' compensation submissions for trucking and transportation clients.
- Analyze loss history, operations, driver exposure, safety programs, regulatory compliance, and financial condition.
- Determine appropriate classification codes and pricing strategies based on risk exposure and company guidelines.
- Collaborate with agents, brokers, and internal stakeholders to obtain necessary information and negotiate coverage terms.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to less seasoned underwriters and other underwriting team members.
- Monitor portfolio performance, identify trends, and recommend strategies to maintain profitability.
- Ensure underwriting decisions align with company policies, carrier guidelines, and state regulations.
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of all underwriting decisions and communications.
- Participate in audits, internal meetings, and cross-departmental initiatives as needed.
- Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and client meetings when required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in business, finance, risk management, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 4+ years of trucking/transportation risk focused workers’ compensation experience and/or 2+ years as a trucking/transportation workers’ compensation underwriter.
- In-depth knowledge of workers’ compensation regulations, classification codes (NCCI), and rating methodologies.
- Strong understanding of trucking operations, driver safety programs, and DOT compliance. Proficient at analyzing CAB reports a plus.
- Proven ability to assess complex risks and make sound underwriting decisions.
- Proficiency in underwriting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and analytical skills.
- Professional designations (WCP, TRIP, ARM, CPCU) a plus.
Work Environment:
- Monday-Friday in office (with periodic remote days)
- Occasional travel may be required for client visits or industry events
