BestSelf Behavioral Health (BestSelf) is an innovative organization formed through the merger of Child & Adolescent Treatment Services and Lake Shore Behavioral Health in June 2017. Both organizations served this community for a combined 120 years and are proven leaders in innovative delivery of behavioral health services in Western New York. Their shared reputation and stellar delivery of quality care in the community, led the Boards of Directors of both organizations to the creation of what is now the largest community-based behavioral health organization serving children and adults of all ages in Western New York.

The Chief People Officer (CPO) will be an innovative and collaborative problem solver who builds and implements the Talent Management strategy in support of BestSelf’s Mission, Vision and Values. The Vision will seek to inspire staff members to do their absolute best work while simultaneously allowing them to bring their best and most authentic selves to work each day.

The CPO will be a humble coach and advocate and will be responsible for providing leadership, coaching and development and overall management of the BestSelf Human Resources Team.

This position is based in Buffalo, NY, reports to the CEO and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team. The CPO has 3 direct reports and oversees a team of 11 people.

The ideal candidate will have the following professional and personal qualities, skills, and characteristics:

Expertise in Talent Management Strategies, Leadership and Culture

The CPO will be a highly strategic advisor and functional expert to the CEO and Senior Leadership Team regarding talent management, employee relations and culture. This person will develop and execute comprehensive HR, employee relations, employee effectiveness and talent management strategies in alignment with the organization’s priorities. The CPO will be a humble coach and advocate for the HR Team and will bring a proven track record of building and leading a best-in-class human resources function with a superior understanding of talent management and talent development strategies. This leader will evaluate and advise on the organization’s policies and systems concerning people and will have a proven ability to foster and strengthen cultures rooted in collaboration, compassion, diversity, equity and inclusion.

The CPO will enhance BestSelf’s reputation as an employer of choice through the development and implementation of a wide range of innovative employee support and development initiatives. This collaborative leader will build and lead the vision to advance BestSelf’s key business objective to recruit, develop and retain top talent.

The CPO will catalyze new approaches to improve results by transforming HR systems and services. This leader will have practical experience in communicating change, including those related to historic practices, traditions and long-established systems. Proactive and insightful, the CPO will bring a mindset to challenge the status quo. This leader will support the BestSelf team by operating with a high degree of transparency and clarity, in addition to focusing on outcomes.

Influential Relationship Builder and Collaborator

It is imperative that the CPO fosters an atmosphere of collaboration and partnership across the organization. Critical to success in this role, the Chief People Officer will be skilled at building and sustaining excellent relationships across BestSelf and will partner with senior leaders and other managers to evaluate and resolve employee-related issues. The CPO will be a natural partner with a demonstrated ability to connect, build bridges and command respect. The CPO will work to develop relationships, identifying efficiencies and leveraging opportunities for the benefit of the organization. The CPO will be inclusive, allowing for the building of consensus and recognition of teamwork. An engaging and supportive leader, with a track record of motivating and inspiring others to achieve impact through creativity and leveraging individual strengths to meet organizational goals.

A compassionate leader in the Human Resource sector, the CPO will have a deep understanding of the issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and will embed these ideas in the policies and practices designed and supported by the Human Resources Team. Experienced in working with diverse populations, this person will have the character and integrity necessary to develop rapport with people of varying experiences, backgrounds and philosophies. This person will relentlessly pursue the creation of an environment where every employee can be their authentic selves.

  • Senior level HR leadership experience with demonstrated ability to design and implement innovative talent strategies to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Demonstrated capacity for effective collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Successful management of multiple, co-occurring projects, analyzing complex processes and designing solutions to address challenging problems.
  • Multiple examples of successfully leading a team to achieve goals and specific objectives.
  • A strong track record of training and developing managers and employees and providing the tools and resources necessary for success.
  • Experience working with diverse populations to create equity and inclusion and achieve common goals.
  • Strong emotional intelligence.
  • Relevant educational background with demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and development.
  • Experience working in the field of behavioral health or healthcare helpful but not required.
  • Experience working for a non-profit organization helpful but not required.
  • Proficient and up to date with current computer and technical skills to effectively lead, manage and communicate (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Video conferencing, Database software, etc.)
