Position Summary
The Director of Accounting / Controller is responsible for managing the company’s internal accounting department, all accounting functions, preparation of financial statements, assistance with tax returns, budgets preparation and forecasts, and variance reports.
Essential Job Functions
Manage and grow an accounting team (four team members) while providing them with ongoing coaching, training, mentoring, and performance monitoring
Maintain integrity of the general ledger, and drive the annual budget process
Preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports
Monitor cash and line-of-credit transactions and balances
Oversee and ensure accuracy of all operations of accounting, including general accounting, bank reconciliations, balance sheets, income statements, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and fixed asset and depreciation schedules
Provide guidance and response to accounting inquiries from upper management
Assist in the creation of standard policies and procedures to comply with general
accounting principles, tax requirements, compliance, and management reporting
Maintain internal controller systems; make recommendations for improvements
Coordinate with outside accounting firm(s) to prepare timely and accurate financials, taxes, audits, and any additional information as needed
Oversee reporting and revenue recognition related to project management
Assist with reporting and monitoring real estate development and acquisitions
Assist real estate investment team with deal closings, including lender requests and state-mandated reconciliations
Provide oversight and accountability for all activities and responsibilities performed in the accounting department
Direct the day-to-day activities of the accounting team to ensure all assignments (including all levels of reporting) are completed on time and accurately
Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or finance
7-10 years’ experience in a financial management role
Experience in real estate industry preferred*
CPA and public accounting designation preferred*
Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret financial statements and/or other various types of internal financial management reports
In-depth financial knowledge and the ability to forecast and prepare budgets
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
Strong computer and software skills: proficiency in MS Office programs and QuickBooks as well as other general ledger applications; any software knowledge specific real estate-related programs (such as RealPage or Onesite) is preferred*
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to plan and manage duties under strict time constraints without direct supervision
Supervisory experience required; will have 4 direct reports
