Assistant Controller

The Assistant Controller is responsible for preparing financial materials for Clayco’s real estate group, CRG. These responsibilities may include, but not be limited to, maintaining, adjusting, and analyzing accounting records, preparing financial statements and supplementary information, reviewing project valuations, creating ad hoc reports, and preparing construction draws and providing accounting services for special purpose affiliated entities. The Assistant Controller must be accustomed to meeting multiple deadlines in a fast-paced company.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Project administration
    • Interpretation and application of project documents such as loan, lease, operating agreements and PSA
    • Partner/member/lender/contractor/title company relations and reporting, as necessary
    • Prepare and track project funding requests
    • Prepare summary of lien waivers required and track receipt of same by draw
    • Timely solicit and obtain appropriate approval for project costs and prepare disbursements following draw funding
    • Prepare invoices for costs funded sources other than loan and equity proceeds
    • Make bank deposits as necessary
    • Identify eligible project costs incurred by CRG and ensure prompt reimbursement
    • Maintain project-specific cash summary and projection
    • Maintain budget projection and comparison to project pro forma
    • Perform monthly general ledger accounting and prepare financial statements
    • Compile consolidating financial statements for projects with dual accounting
    • Review financial statements prepared by third-party contractors
    • Prepare and update workpapers supporting account balances
    • Update fee-sharing summaries
    • Perform cost segregation analysis following project completion
    • Project personal property tax assessments and prepare and file annual returns
    • Prepare 1099s and other reports required by taxing authorities
    • Assist in land/loan closing and property sale as necessary
  • Consistently review project valuation (gross and net), calculate investor’s share, and compare to pro forma
  • Yardi software administration and maintenance
  • Arrange and manage scheduled project pursuit payments (e.g. earnest money deposits)
  • Periodically prepare and update entity tax projections
  • CRG
  • Perform monthly general ledger review and maintenance
  • Prepare and update supplemental schedules supporting account balances
  • Compile of monthly financial and management reports
  • Prepare projections of development fees receipts
  • Maintain project list inventory in time tracking software
  • Review, research, edit time entries in time tracking software as necessary
  • Ensure proper allocation of costs and labor to other enterprise business units
  • Perform special projects as necessary
  • Prepare, as assigned, schedules of pre-development costs
  • Manage 2-4 staff/senior accountants

Job Specifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • Real estate accounting experience preferred
  • Previous management experience preferred
  • Previous experience in Yardi (administration and setup experience preferred)
  • CPA with a mix of public and private experience preferred
  • 5+ years of accounting experience
  • Motivated, hardworking, team player
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
