Directed Energy Weapon Systems Specialist (CDEW)

Our client, a leading organization in the field, is seeking a highly regarded Subject Matter Expert (SME) with expertise in counter directed energy weapon (CDEW) systems, directed energy weapons (DEW), and nuclear weapon system technologies. This exciting opportunity is based in Dayton, OH, supporting the Engineering & Support Solutions Business Unit. The ideal candidate will provide timely and accurate assessments of adversary DEW, nuclear threats, CDEW programs, and weapons-related S&T advancements to defense planners and operators. In addition, they will deliver technical briefings, reports, and analytical documents, offer guidance to junior staff, contribute to multi-functional analytic teams, and stay up to date with relevant CDEW/nuclear technologies and trends. The position also involves devising and evaluating new methodologies and analytical tools, as well as managing programs and customer relationships within the defense industry. The successful applicant will conduct extensive research, provide technical assessments, and offer policy recommendations on existing and emerging CDEW and nuclear technologies. This is a full-time role located at Wright-Patterson AFB.

Responsibilities for this role include:

  • Demonstrating expertise in high energy laser (HEL) and/or high power microwave (HPM) technology and counter directed energy technologies.
  • Identifying and monitoring activities and investments by the DoD, industry partners, and the global technology community to enhance the development and implementation of advanced CDEW and nuclear weapon systems.
  • Taking charge of Research, Development, and Test and Evaluation activities across various functional subsystems, such as power sources, pulsed power systems, radio frequency sources, high-power antennas, optical systems, and sensors.
  • Collaborating with scientists, engineers, and technicians to ensure successful HPM, Radio Frequency (RF), HEL, and nuclear system development.
  • Assisting in the integration of hardware components onto platforms, including assembly and installation at WPAFB and remote test sites.
  • Conducting investigations on RF propagation and laser-target interactions to optimize performance and lethality effects.
  • Generating new projects and determining funding requirements effectively.
  • Demonstrating excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear and concise reports.
  • Providing subject matter expertise and support for ongoing and future projects.
  • Collaborating with technical personnel and customers to clarify tasks, address issues, propose changes, and document final solutions.
  • Leading programs and tasks, developing innovative technical concepts and activities.
  • Preparing presentations for leadership and decision-makers within the government.

Minimum requirements:

  • Current DoD Top Secret clearance level with CNWDI and NATO access, eligible for SAP.
  • Recognized within the DEW community for expertise in DE technologies or systems, with at least 10 years of experience.
  • 10 years of experience in DEW development, either through analysis, hardware systems, or both.
  • Knowledge of DoD acquisition processes, policies, and guidance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional customer service skills, with a strong ability to build relationships.
  • Advanced experience in moderate hazard work areas (e.g., explosives handling, radiation, fissile material, electrical), and thorough knowledge of process hazard analysis, integrated work documents, and safety basis operations.
  • Over 3 years of experience in intelligence analysis, including the use of multi-INT databases for analytic assessments and briefings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state nuclear programs, trends, and technologies.
  • Proficiency in utilizing S&T and academic databases.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and lead peers, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex analyses to laymen and senior-level government representatives in a clear manner.
  • Proficient in producing technical analysis results and program characterizations in writing.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree in an engineering discipline or related STEM field.
  • Knowledge of organizational structures, functions, and communication protocols within the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD).
  • Familiarity with OUSD(R&E), OUSD(A&S)/Industrial Policy, Defense Technology Security Administration (DTSA), and intelligence partners.
  • Military or defense-related experience and understanding of operational planning.
  • Experience in devising, utilizing, and communicating methodological approaches to complex problem sets.
  • Familiarity with nuclear-related and S&T analytic centers within the DoD, IC, and/or Interagency (USANCA, DIA/DCP, NASIC, DOE).
