Position Summary
As a Cloud Storage Subject Matter Expert, you will lead the architecture, implementation, and optimization of scalable, secure, and cost-effective cloud storage solutions with a strong emphasis on AWS technologies. This role demands a deep understanding of Data Lake and Data Mesh architectures, along with the ability to collaborate across teams to meet strategic data and infrastructure goals.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the technical lead and SME for enterprise cloud storage systems, with a focus on structured and unstructured big data.
Architect and optimize storage solutions using AWS services such as S3, EBS, EFS, FSx, and Glacier.
Design and implement modern data architectures including Data Lakes and Data Mesh to support large-scale analytics and data pipelines.
Lead cloud migration projects, transitioning from traditional SAN/NAS/tape systems to native cloud storage.
Define and enforce data lifecycle, backup, disaster recovery, and retention strategies.
Evaluate and recommend emerging cloud storage technologies and best practices.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (DevOps, data engineering, cybersecurity) to ensure security, performance, and governance.
Troubleshoot complex cloud storage issues to ensure system resilience and availability.
Document architecture, policies, and SOPs; mentor team members through knowledge sharing.
Ensure compliance with organizational data security and confidentiality protocols.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
5+ years of experience in cloud storage or enterprise data infrastructure.
Expertise in AWS cloud storage (S3, EBS, EFS, FSx, Glacier).
Hands-on experience with Data Lake and Data Mesh design and implementation.
Proven success in cloud migration projects involving large-scale storage systems.
In-depth understanding of storage types (block, file, object), availability, and performance tuning.
Experience working in or supporting regulated/federal environments.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly.
Preferred Qualifications
AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional) or AWS Certified Storage – Specialty.
Experience with Kubernetes storage (Persistent Volumes, CSI drivers).
Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
Exposure to hybrid or multi-cloud storage (Azure Blob, Google Cloud Storage).
Experience with serverless data processing (AWS Lambda).
Prior support for federal contracts or agencies.
Security Clearance Requirements
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust, Secret, or higher clearance depending on project requirements.
Work Environment
Primarily remote/telework with occasional travel to client sites or headquarters in Greenbelt, MD.
