Human Factors and Usability Researcher

Our client in Philadelphia, PA is seeking a Human Factors and Usability Researcher with experience in the medical device field. Relocation assistance provided.

As a Human Factors and Usability Researcher, you’ll work 50/50 remote and on-site in our Center City Philadelphia office and in collaboration with our interaction designers, industrial designers, and engineering team to ensure that products are safe and easy to use by the end-user. You will work with your colleagues to guide our clients to be compliant with usability regulatory standards and guidance across the globe. You will be challenged to participate in every phase of human factors research for products, both medical and consumer in nature, from planning to data collection to reporting.

Our Usability lab has been outfitted with recommended Covid-19 safety features.

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Contribute to the design, execution, and reporting on usability research at various stages of product development, with products both consumer and medical in nature.

 

  • Assist in defining user needs, translating those needs into measurable specifications, and completing heuristic reviews of device user-interfaces.

 

  • Work with other researchers to translate uFMEA, risk/hazard analysis, and/or IFY into an appropriate usability testing protocol.

 

  • Supportseniormembersoftheteaminwritingandexecutinggenerativeandevaluativeresearch protocols, analyzing research insights and data, and writing test reports.

 

  • Assist with note taking during usability testing sessions.

 

 

 

More About You

 

You have a degree in human factors engineering, engineering psychology, or another research-heavy discipline. You have at least 3 years of hands-on, professional applied human factors research experience. You have a track record of delivering regulatory compliant validation research, and providing guidance leading to the successful launch of physical products. Ideally, you have worked in a consultancy environment.

You are clever.

You have a true passion for evaluative product research and human-centered product design, as evidenced by your education and previous work experience. You are familiar with all forms of evaluative product research and can help guide our clients in defining user groups, intended uses, and use environments of the product.

You have experience writing plans and technical reports, and using them to improve the effectiveness, safety, and usability of consumer products and medical devices. You have experience conducting formative testing and validation studies. You demonstrate high standards of workmanship and attention to detail.

You are curious.

You like to explore new territories and learn from others. You can successfully lead clients through problem definition and the innovation process during workshop sessions. You understand research methodologies, concepting processes, approaches, and tools, and take the initiative to improve them. You’re also comfortable with global travel (role may include up to 30% travel) in the future.

You are comfortable with ambiguity and complexity, because sometimes that leads to the most unique, unexpected design solutions. You possess a strong work ethic and are willing to “do what it takes” to get the job done.

You are confident.

You have excellent writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills – all needed for research, facilitation, interviews, and client presentations. Your writing is concise, grammatically correct, and has the appropriate tone. You are an effective listener and contributor at client meetings and have demonstrated your ability to document pertinent information/action items/opportunities, as well as provide a written summary post-meeting. You possess strong empathy and exceptional verbal communication skills that allow you to communicate with anyone, and unlock what users are thinking and feeling about a product.

In addition to your research skills, you may have experience in graphic design, photo, video, and/or audio recording/editing.
