Manages the implementation, installation, purchasing, and support of network technologies, including Local Area Network/Wide Area Network LAN/WAN systems. Evaluates current systems. Works on complex problems where analysis of situation requires in-depth evaluation of various factors. Plans large scale systems projects through vendor comparison and cost studies. Provides work leadership and training to lower level network engineers.
Under general direction, incumbents performs work requiring advanced knowledge, often involving multiple phases and significant collaboration. Applies in-depth technical knowledge to independently and innovatively solve a full range of complex and sometimes unusual problems that impact organizational success. Brings industry-level expertise to function, and recommends changes to remain up-to-date or competitive. Establishes processes and procedures to ensure the effective and efficient operation of a complex function. Acts as a technical project leader.
1. Designs and implements infrastructure changes to the network, including upgrading network switches and routers, increasing port capacity, and installing new circuits.
2. Serves as an expert in analyzing and resolving difficult and complex networking problems, including:
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In-depth knowledge and experience in:
LAN/WAN systems, networks, and applications. In depth knowledge and experience with:
TCP/IP and routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, IGRP, etc).
Network switches, routers, firewalls, virtual private networks and other related hardware.
Network performance tuning capabilities in a multi-protocol, multi-operating system environment.
Wide area network technologies such as ATM, SONET, and Ethernet over Fiber.
Cisco IOS platform. In depth knowledge and hands-on experience with network management platforms in a mission-critical production network environment.
Network security issues, and platforms (firewall rules, ACLS, etc). Experience in Intrusion detection systems, concepts, and mechanisms.
Issues related to interconnection of multiple networks, routing among them, ISP connections, etc.
Encryption and authentication technologies (e.g., SecurID, PGP, PKI, VPN, SSH, etc.). Network Infrastructure Design: Gigabit Ethernet/ VLANs/ TCPIP/ ISDN/ VPN/ Frame Relay/ T1/ DS3/ OC3- 48/ ATM/ SONET / Voice and Video communications/ VoIP/ Wireless networks and security/ Converged networks.
Wireless network design and implementation. In depth experience with encryption configuration and maintenance.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent knowledge.
Minimum Experience: Eight years of related professional experience.
Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: Cisco Certified Internet Expert (CCIE) Preferred.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to Manager, Network and Systems Engineering. General direction is provided.
