    Job Description

    Mackinac Straits Health System is searching for a Chief Nursing officer to join our team. This position is open due to an upcoming retirement. The Chief Nursing Officer has the authority and responsibility for the management of the nursing organization and is accountable for the clinical practice of nursing. The CNO has oversight responsibilities for the provision of safe, effective, high-quality nursing care throughout the MSHS System 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The CNO also has the responsibility for the development, presentation, and management of the Nursing Services’ portion of MSHS’s budget, work team productivity, customer satisfaction, and staff retention activities. Provides leadership for the operations of Nursing, Discharge Planning, Infection Control, Education, and Quality. The nurse executive provides leadership for nursing by setting and maintaining standards for the clinical practice of nursing, ensuring the achievement of goals and objectives for the nursing organization, and providing management expertise. As a member of the executive team, the CNO participates with the governing body, administration and medical staff in the organization's decision-making structure and processes, and shares responsibility for fulfilling the organization's mission. The CNO is responsible for establishing productive working relationships with the medical staff and support departments, and for being responsive to community needs.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

     

    (25%)* Responsible for the development and implementation of programs, standards and policies that support the clinical practice of nursing and for effective nursing care delivery systems throughout the health system. Provides direction in analyzing and maintaining nursing’s compliance with regulations and legislation (i.e., DNV, CMS, Public Health, etc.).

     

    (25%)* Responsible for communicating the role of nursing and related issues to various entities. Reinforces and maximizes synergy with MSHS.

     

    (25%)* Assesses the influence of the health care environment on patient care and nursing practice in developing and/or approving policies and programs for the nursing organization.

     

    (25%)* Analyzes performance, celebrating successes and ensuring continuous improvement. Coaches, mentors, and acts as a role model to ensure a positive culture and excellent work environment. Is a hands-on leader who effectively engages and communicates and is a role model of excellent patient experience and leadership.

     

    Other Duties and Responsibilities:

     

    Ensures the development of mechanisms that address ethical and legal issues that influence the practice of nursing.

    Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of the organization’s mission, goals and objectives.

    The CNO participates in defined and established meetings of the hospitals’ leaders and with other senior clinical and managerial leaders.

    Responsible for defining and interpreting nursing practice and the nursing and clinical care needs of patients.

    Designs an organizational structure and associated policies and programs that reflect utilization of available resources and responsiveness to the personal and professional development of the clinical staff.

    Works collaboratively with the medical staff to develop mutually agreed upon clinical programs of care and to develop associated policies; to address issues related to the provision of nursing.

    SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    MI license at time of submission, or obtain immediately upon acceptance - Required

    2+ years CNO minimum experience - Required

    5+ years of healthcare management experience with demonstration of increasing responsibilities - Required

    Bachelor's Degree in Nursing - Required

    Strong Leadership Experience - Required

    Evidence of active community involvement and collaboration efforts

    BLS (AHA) - Required

    Demonstrated ability to manage projects/performance improvement processed and patient experience

    Knowledge of communication and business development
