Position Overview:

The Controller is responsible for the integrity and timeliness of all HMC financial statements and related books and records. The person in this role oversees all accounting functions including but not limited to accounts payable and receivable, billings, customer service, collections, payroll, filings, verification, auditing, and compliance. The Controller ensures accounting tasks are completed in a timely manner according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The Controller ensures internal controls and key processes are designed and followed appropriate for the size of HM Cragg.


This position works under minimal supervision, leads the day-to-day administration of a division in the Finance Department and provides advanced expertise on special projects. Responsibilities include supervising professional-level and entry-level accounting staff.


Reporting Relationship: The Controller reports to the President/CEO



  • Manages and supervises a team of 4-6 direct reports, conducts performance reviews, provides developmental feedback and facilitates individual career development plans
  • Oversight and control of all aspects of Cash Management including banking activities, credit cards and credit facilities
  • Manages all aspects of the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable process including collections and risk management and maintenance of customer/vendor files
  • Manages payroll and commissions including 401k and benefits as they relate to payroll
  • Manages the Customer Service function (with GAAP oversight only on the Service department Customer Service position)
  • Accurately oversees all inventory controls and is responsible for the matching of physical inventory to HMC books and records
  • Manages all aspects of insurance risk management including property/casualty, work comp, auto and health benefit plans
  • Prepares and analyzes all HMC financial statements on a monthly basis including account reconciliations to adhere to budget and company financial goals
  • Responsible for the protection of HMC assets by designing and monitoring internal controls to protect such assets
  • Generates reports and identifies issues, conducts trend analyses and prepares management reports
  • Leads the year-end external CPA review from planning through report generation
  • Documents all key processes within the accounting department
  • Responsible for all sales tax reporting, ensuring customer information is correct and company maintains state compliance
  • Accurately prepares accounting reports for senior management
  • Coordinates functions related to an ESOP entity including repurchase obligations, shareholder reporting and year end compliance
  • Ensures the functionality of the Company’s ERP system (currently SAGE 100)
  • Support during due diligence initiatives for merger and acquisition activities
  • Manages Facilities staff for such functions as reception, supplies and events
  • Manages all aspects of the Technology function including outsourcing, break/fix, hardware, software, security and uptime
  • Performs other accounting, financial and admin responsibilities as necessary

Travel expectations: Minimal travel required


Posting Qualifications:

  • 4-year college degree or equivalent; CPA is a plus, not required
  • 5-8 years of accounting leadership experience
  • Leadership skills to provide mentoring and professional development to staff
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and organizational skills
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of Sage100 system is a plus, not required
