2021 has been a landmark year in Tides’ 45-year history. We are experiencing a unique and powerful opportunity for transformative change in how we lead and impact social justice and shared prosperity. Taking committed actions to prepare for this change, we have welcomed an expanded and largely new executive team, partnered with a top-notch social impact consulting firm to revitalize our strategic plan, increased our resources and capacity focused on operational excellence, and grown our core staff significantly. These investments will help Tides to better serve our partners and bring our vision – of a world of shared prosperity and social justice – to life.

Tides is hiring a Founding Chief Impact Officer (CIO), a critical role focused on ensuring high-quality, on-time execution of our strategic priorities to advance our goals and mission. The CIO reports to the CEO and is a crucial member of the executive team. They will work cross-functionally, act as a change agent to drive the execution and implementation of strategic initiatives and help build a culture that promotes operational excellence. The CIO will build a high performing team to help align organizational decision making and resource allocations to our purpose and values, and ensure we are well positioned for long-term success and sustainability.

The right candidate shares our vision, has the courage to create and pursue big ideas, encourages smart experimentation/execution and will bring innovation to Tides. This role has been created in response to the significant growth Tides has experienced and the need to achieve excellence across the organization.

What You Will Do

Organizational Leadership

  • Serve as a strategic advisor and confidante to the CEO to advance Tides' vision, mission, approach and strategic plan

  • Build a collaborative process to operationalize the strategic plan, and create annual goals and metrics aligned to the budget.

  • Support resource capacity planning and the creation of a robust onboarding and upskilling training program

  • Leverage and integrate disparate data sources to drive strategic decision making

  • With the CEO and Executive Leadership Team, define operational excellence, develop organizational Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and monitor progress against goals

  • Work collaboratively across the organization to create and nourish a strong, collaborative, remote culture that embraces and operationalizes Tides’ commitment to JEDI

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Build positive relationships with team members across the organization to influence outcomes and maintain project momentum

  • With organizational leadership, improve collaboration and information sharing across cross-functional teams

  • Manage the organization’s learning agenda and incorporate learnings to drive continuous improvement; track progress and adapt high-level timeline, capacity and work plan to ensure initiatives are completed on time, budget and with excellence

  • Design, document, and implement efficient processes and systems that improve cross-functional communication, decision-making, and the ability to execute organization-wide initiatives

  • Collaborate with Tides’ internal communications team to ensure staff and board are consistently informed on progress against strategic initiatives

What You Will Bring

Educational Background

  • A Bachelor’s Degree required and Advanced Degree preferred (MPA, MBA, or other relevant degrees)

Qualifications

  • Passion for Tides’ mission and demonstrated transformative impact in relation to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • 15+ years of experience leading and operationalizing strategic initiatives, and/or cross-functional projects

  • 10+ years of experience as a trusted member of an organization's executive leadership team

  • Track record of excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills

  • Experience using data to analyze performance and drive strategic decision making

  • Ability to engage and influence senior leaders to gain support for ideas, proposals, projects, and solutions in ways consistent with the values of the organization

  • Ability to move comfortably between high-level strategic thinking and intricate details, as well as willingness to roll up your sleeves to solve problems

  • Ability to translate and structure complex information for effective decision making and progress towards goals

  • A track record of successfully increasing the change agility and capacity of organizations

  • Ability to learn quickly, to pivot when needed, and to be effective in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment

Location is flexible with San Francisco/Bay Area or New York City preferred; open to remote in the US
