Great Oaks Legacy Charter School is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) who can build upon the strong foundation of the organization and lead efforts to ensure financial sustainability of this $40M organization. Reporting to the Executive Director, the CFO is the financial leader of Great Oaks Legacy Charter School and is responsible for fiscal integrity and efficiency. They will drive financial performance and sustainability as GOLCS enters the next phase of its growth plan, growing from seven schools to ten. The CFO direct reports include a Controller and Real Estate Manager.


The CFO will play a crucial role in the following areas:

Organizational Leadership

  • Serve as the chief financial strategist and a thought leader on all financial matters for GOLCS and develop strong professional working relationships with the ED, senior leadership team members, the board, and school leaders.

  • Provide leadership and direction on all aspects of finance, including budgeting, forecasting, long-term planning, risk management, capital planning, financial reporting and analysis, accounting, cash flow planning and grants management.

  • In partnership with the ED, senior leadership team, and board, support and provide robust financial analysis for GOLCS’s short and long-range strategic planning efforts. Maintain the multi-year financial model and set financial targets to ensure strong financial targets to ensure financial health and financial sustainability.

  • Interface with the Board of Directors and communicate timely and accurate financial information for monthly Board meetings. Lead the Board Finance Committee; in coordination with the CEO, prepare and review financial reports and follow up on action items as needed.

  • With the senior leadership team, cultivate a culture of collaboration, accountability, and excellence among the staff, as well as our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Financial Management

  • Lead and improve the annual budgeting process for our schools as well as the network office. Monitor performance and meet regularly with budget stakeholders to ensure accountability and help build their business acumen.

  • Develop and communicate timely, accurate and insightful financial management reports for Board and leadership use.

  • Lead budgeting, management and reporting of state, federal, and private grants, including the management of $15M in federal stimulus funds over the next three years.

  • Oversee accounting activities and ensure accuracy and compliance with appropriate GAAP/GASB standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Establish, maintain and document sound financial policies, procedures, systems, and controls and ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal laws. Ensure clean audits.

  • Oversee risk management and proactively review and address potential risks that may impact the network.

Operational Strategy

  • Identify and develop changes in systems, policy, and technology to support the network’s continued growth and to identify solutions to automate and/or solve network-wide and departmental challenges.

  • Implement best-in-class processes in procurement, campus-level financial planning and analysis, and cost management; Promote a culture of financial rigor, transparency, and accountability.

  • Oversee facilities management and lead the organization’s real estate strategy and projects. Manage consultants, attorneys, and other partners to deliver affordable new facilities and ensure major renovations are completed on schedule and within budget.

Team Management

  • Ensure all team members are in alignment with GOLCS’s mission, vision, values, and strategic direction.

  • Manage, train, and develop the finance team to ensure the accurate execution of financial operations (i.e. accounting, reporting, banking, budgeting, and payroll).

  • Build a strong team culture that incorporates a strong customer service orientation into all aspects of the finance and accounting team’s work.


  • A passion and commitment to Great Oaks Legacy’s mission to prepare Newark’s students for success in college and beyond.

  • 5+ years of experience leading a nonprofit or educational organization’s finance team with proven experience in budgeting, multi-year financial modeling, accounting, and planning.

  • Successful track record of leading and developing high-performing teams committed to the mission and goals of the organization, with the ability to foster trust and collaboration among team members and manage through change with flexibility and poise.

  • Demonstrated success developing, managing, cultivating, and leveraging strong interpersonal relationships and partnerships across all levels of an organization towards shared goals and outcomes.

  • Strong change management skills, and the ability to influence and facilitate decision-making.

  • Demonstrated ability to be proactive and take initiative.

  • High level of intellectual rigor with a collaborative, creative and service-oriented mindset.

  • Inspirational and empathetic individual of unquestioned integrity, ethics, and values, treating others with respect, and having a demonstrated record of supporting and driving initiatives to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Highly effective communications skills - with the ability to easily convey the organization’s successes and opportunities with passion in written and verbal formats in both formal and informal situations.

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with a strong preference in finance, accounting or related field; advanced degree in a related field, MBA and/or CPA strongly preferred. NJ School Business Administrator (SBA) licensure a plus.
