2021 was a landmark year in Tides’ 45-year history. We are experiencing a unique and powerful opportunity for transformative change in how we lead and impact social justice and shared prosperity. Taking committed actions to prepare for this change, we have welcomed an expanded and largely new executive team, partnered with a top-notch social impact consulting firm to revitalize our strategic plan, increased our resources and capacity focused on operational excellence, and grown our core staff significantly. These investments will help Tides to better serve our partners and to move forward in alignment with our new strategic direction.

Tides is hiring a Head of Finance (HF), a critical new role focused on strengthening the financial and compliance integrity of a scaling organization, creating a robust culture of fiscal management, and building a solid financial organization to support the Tides’ impact goal. He/She/they will provide advice and analysis to the Executive Leadership Team and the Board of Directors and Committees, and ensure we are well positioned for long-term success and sustainability. The HF is a direct report of the Chief Financial Officer / Chief Investment Officer and leads a finance team that oversees:

  • Financial Management (budgeting, analysis, forecasting, and reporting)

  • Fiscal Sponsorship and Funds Support (providing financial strategy, problem-solving, and transactional support to internal teams and external partners)

  • Financial Operations and Compliance (accounts payable, accounts receivable, treasury, general ledger accounting, payroll, statutory filings)

Tides currently has a $40M operating budget that enables the organization to support annual activity of more than $1B in inflows and spending through donor-advised grants and fiscal sponsored programs.

The HF will lead a team of three direct reports and a total team of approximately 55. This role has been created in response to the significant growth Tides has experienced and the need to achieve financial excellence and continuous improvement across the organization.

What You Will Do

Organizational Leadership

  • Co-develop with the CFO / Chief Investment Officer and implement a strong vision for the finance department, including structure, skills, resources, and technology systems, to ensure we are well positioned for long-term success and sustainability.

  • Collaborate across departments/divisions/affiliates and business partners to improve operations, support decision-making, ensure financial integrity, and implement best practices and innovations in financial management.

  • Promote a sense of team; ensure cross functional and inter/intra-departmental collaboration to ensure that the needs of internal and external stakeholders are met.

  • Establish the strategy and operational plans for the finance team with SMART goals and objectives; deliver results of the highest quality, completed in a timely manner and within budget.

  • Maintain opportunities for staff development and promote a learning environment for all staff; actively promote JEDI as core values, both with and among supervised staff.

  • Champion and encourage customer-centric service across the finance functions.

  • With the CFO / Chief Investment Officer, support the Financial Capital and Audit Committees of the Board of Directors; serve on other internal committees as needed.

  • Support the CFO / Chief Investment Officer on implementation of the organization’s impact investment priorities and policies in conjunction with the Director of Investments.

Financial Management

  • Partner with the CFO / Chief Investment Officer to develop and implement financial strategies for the organization within our Blended Return on Investment and Smart Risk frameworks.

  • Lead budget planning and forecasting for all Tides entities; prepare analysis and presentations for executive management, the Board and its relevant Committees.

  • Provide leadership and managers with easily-accessible financial reports and analysis to enable prioritization and performance of programs and operations, as well as improve transparency. Ensure the organization has robust financial review processes that support active management and forecasting across the organization.

  • Oversee complex business case modeling and evaluation of large-scale programs and projects; develop and evaluate scenarios to support leaders in making data-driven decisions.

  • Develop sound equitable cost allocation methodologies utilizing appropriate drivers and bases to ensure transparent understanding of the full cost of our activities.

Fiscal Sponsorship and Funds Support

  • Develop the structures, processes, and systems to enable the finance teams to serve internal and external partners so Tides can achieve its impact goal.

  • Ensure Tides’ teams have the skills, capacity, information, systems, and transactional support to meet the strategic, complex problem solving, and financial operational needs of internal and external partners to achieve Tides’ impact goal.

  • Develop knowledge management systems and protocols to support ongoing learning and development needs for Tides’ team members to have the financial capabilities needed to achieve the impact goal.

  • Serve as a key leader in problem-solving and managing issues through our fiscal sponsorship work and funds in conjunction with department directors.

Financial Operations and Compliance

Work closely with senior leaders in Finance, Legal Risk Compliance, People, and Partnerships functions to ensure that Tides meets its fiduciary responsibilities aligned with our impact goal and organizational priorities. Key operating areas include the following:

  • Annual audit and tax / regulatory filings, including IRS form 990s

  • Integrity of the General Ledger and accounting / financial systems and processes

  • Accounts payable, Accounts receivable, Payroll, Treasury

What You Will Bring

Educational Background

  • Master’s degree in Finance/Accounting/Business or related field, additional related college courses or professional training, or equivalent work experience are required


  • Passion for Tides’ mission and demonstrated transformative leadership in relation to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • 15+ years of directly-related, progressive finance/accounting experience, including a minimum of 10+ years of experience as a trusted member of an organization's executive leadership team (e.g. a current or former CFO is ideal). Experience in a not-for-profit, community foundation, donor advised fund sponsor, international environment, and/or professional services organization is a plus. Familiarity with leading-edge technologies and market practices for shared services and financial services operations is a plus.

  • Expertise in financial planning, financial modeling, budget management and cost allocation methodologies is required; familiarity with GAAP and not-for-profit accounting is a plus.

  • Strong customer service, communication, and problem/conflict resolution skills; high EQ with the ability to build strong relationships across functional areas.

  • Strategic thinker and systems builder with demonstrated success leading change management initiatives.

  • Strong team manager with exceptional hiring and coaching skills; able to assess, motivate and develop staff in a remote environment.

  • Ability to learn quickly; able to flex and/or pivot when needed and operate effectively in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment.

  • Commitment to embracing and valuing diversity, equity and inclusion; working with a multicultural workforce and sensitivity and appreciation to cultural differences.


Location is flexible with San Francisco/Bay Area or New York City preferred; open to remote elsewhere in the U.S. with the ability to travel to S.F. and NYC as required.
