Reporting to the President, this role will work closely with the executive team, school leaders, network leaders, Board, and external stakeholders. They will serve as a thought partner on strategic planning, lead financial reporting, annual budgeting and long-term planning, and compliance. They will work collaboratively across Ascend&rsquo;s 17 schools to prioritize resources to achieve student outcomes. </span></p><p><span style="color:#242424;">The CFO will lead the finance, accounting, treasury, and risk management functions and manage a team of 13. The direct reports include an Executive Assistant, Controller, Associate Director of FP&amp;A, and Director of Strategic Projects (which includes payroll). Ascend&rsquo;s FY23-24 operating budget is $172M.</span></p><p>Key Responsibilities</p><p>Strategic Leadership and Decision-Making</p><ul><li><p>Serve as a thought partner and shape and execute Ascend&rsquo;s financial vision and strategy; collaborate on cross-functional initiatives to ensure sustainability.</p></li><li><p>Lead Ascend&rsquo;s long-term financial strategy and planning; ensure all decisions maximize resources available to students.</p></li><li><p>Oversee the organization&rsquo;s fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities&mdash;in conjunction with the Boards and finance committees of Ascend&rsquo;s three legal entities: Ascend Learning, Ascend Charter Schools, and Friends of Ascend. </p></li><li><p>Deliver accurate and timely financial reporting and, through analysis, develop recommendations and take steps to ensure sustainability.</p></li><li><p>Manage Ascend&rsquo;s financial portfolio, including lease and debt obligations, and ensure compliance with debt service, cash-on-hand requirements, and other reporting requirements.</p></li><li><p>Lead oversight of the organization&rsquo;s financial risk management; provide leadership of treasury management, including oversight of all bank accounts and investment planning.</p></li></ul><p>Budget Management and Long-Term Planning</p><ul><li><p>Lead all aspects of annual and long-term planning and provide strategic direction for the effective use of financial resources needed to deliver on Ascend&rsquo;s mission.</p></li><li><p>Partner with school leaders and network team leaders to develop budgets and support them in operating within budget allocations. Guide them in making budget tradeoffs and ensure they understand the financial implications of their decisions.</p></li><li><p>Provide oversight of the multi-year financial model and scenario planning and analyze the impact of changes to key drivers (enrollment, funding, inflation, etc) and changing student needs. Support the executive team in realigning and managing resources to ensure sustainability. </p></li></ul><p>Financial Operational Management &amp; Compliance</p><ul><li><p>Evaluate and oversee the use of financial systems (Adaptive Insights and Ceridian Dayforce) to meet the financial and operational needs of the organization. Lead the change management to maximize efficiencies of processes and procedures.</p></li><li><p>Oversee Ascend&rsquo;s compliance function and identify areas of risk related to federal, state, and local requirements.</p></li><li><p>Oversee timely delivery of annual audits free of findings.</p></li></ul><p>Team Management and Development</p><ul><li><p>Hire, manage, and lead a team of 13 staff members in the accounts payable, financial planning and analysis, accounting, and payroll functions. Coach, develop, and support the team and provide ongoing feedback to ensure they are well-positioned to achieve goals. </p></li><li><p>Oversee the work product of contractual support for overall cohesive operations of the finance function.</p></li><li><p>Foster a team culture that embodies operational excellence and premier customer service, where the team communicates regularly with stakeholders to anticipate financial challenges and engage in proactive problem-solving.</p></li></ul><p>Financial Policies and Procedures and Controls</p><ul><li><p>Evaluate and upgrade the organization&rsquo;s financial systems and procedures; streamline and improve processes that uphold the organization&rsquo;s FPP (financial policies &amp; procedures).</p></li><li><p>Oversee the Controller function to maintain systems to guarantee accuracy and compliance of accounting and reporting; lead the financial affairs of Ascend in accordance with GAAP and government regulations.</p></li><li><p>Serve as the point of contact for Ascend to external auditors, financial institutions, and taxing authorities.</p></li></ul><p>Stakeholder Management </p><ul><li><p>Cultivate strong working relationships with school leadership, board members, finance committees, and key external stakeholders.</p></li><li><p>Effectively communicate and present financial information and proactively update internal and external stakeholders on critical issues.</p></li></ul><p><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>QUALIFICATIONS</strong></span></p><ul><li><p>Bachelor&rsquo;s degree; Master&rsquo;s degree in business administration, finance, or accounting preferred.</p></li><li><p>10+ years of progressive finance and/or accounting experience, including 5+ years leading teams. </p></li><li><p>A mission-aligned leader who is committed to DEIA.</p></li><li><p>Executive-level leadership experience is required, preferably in a $50M+ matrixed organization; nonprofit or charter school experience is highly preferred.</p></li><li><p>Track record of creating systems and leveraging technology to increase efficiencies.</p></li><li><p>Strong team leader with demonstrated success managing and developing people, leading high-functioning teams, and creating a culture of operational excellence; previous experience managing through multiple reporting levels.</p></li><li><p>Ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders built on mutual trust and respect.</p></li><li><p>Exceptional analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills with demonstrated experience identifying problems and implementing solutions. Long-term financial modeling and scenario planning experience is required.</p></li><li><p>Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with a proven ability to meet and exceed ambitious goals.</p></li><li><p>Effective written and verbal communication, including the ability to simplify complex topics for audiences with varying financial expertise.</p></li><li><p>Excellent follow-through skills; ability to multitask, establish and rearrange priorities.</p></li><li><p>A humble, curious leader who loves learning and has high emotional intelligence.</p></li></ul><p><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>COMPENSATION</strong></span></p><p>The salary range for this role is $200,000 to $250,000.
