The recent CREDO study from Stanford University named ReGeneration as the top gap-busting schools in ELA in the state of Illinois and third in Math. POSITION

ReGeneration is seeking an experienced Controller to join our team. Reporting directly to the CFO, you’ll play a critical role in overseeing our organization's financial health and integrity as we manage a $36M budget across five legal entities and two states. With plans to open two new schools in Ohio over the coming years, this role offers a unique opportunity to lead a growing team, enhance our financial infrastructure, and support our mission to transform students’ lives through exceptional education. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in nonprofit accounting, financial management, and compliance and experience working in complex, multi-entity environments.

Responsibilities:

Financial Oversight & Reporting

  • Implement and monitor strong internal controls across all levels of the organization, safeguarding assets and ensuring compliance.

  • Oversee a timely month-end closing process, managing general accounting, cash flow, accounts payable, payroll, grants, and accounts receivable.

  • Lead internal and external audits, working closely with auditors and external stakeholders to ensure smooth, transparent processes.

  • Prepare accurate, timely financial statements for internal and external stakeholders, with insightful updates for senior managers.

  • Maintain compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements, setting a high standard for financial accountability.

  • Support treasury functions, including maintaining strategic relationships with treasury management services.

Financial Systems Design & Management

  • Spearhead the annual budget and forecast process, collaborating with all departments to create accurate, mission-aligned budgets.

  • Lead efforts to consolidate regional finance systems into a unified, network-wide platform, enhancing operational efficiency.

  • Drive payroll process improvements, maximizing efficiency and ensuring timely, accurate employee compensation.

Grant Management

  • Oversee financial aspects of grant management, from budgeting and compliance to reporting, ensuring alignment with grant requirements.

  • Take primary responsibility for grant management in Illinois, strictly adhering to grant guidelines and deadlines.

Financial Policy Development

  • Standardize and implement accounting policies, practices, and procedures across all programs, aligning with national and local regulations.

  • Establish and monitor financial and operating benchmarks, budgets, and reporting standards, providing clear insights on a bi-weekly, monthly, and annual basis.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a high-performing finance team, cultivating a collaborative and supportive work environment.

  • Provide training and professional development opportunities, equipping team members to grow and excel.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, CPA designation, or advanced degree in accounting or finance is strongly preferred.

  • 7+ years of experience in nonprofit accounting and finance, with a track record of success in multi-entity or multi-state environments.

  • 2+ years of leadership experience, with a proven ability to develop and lead high-performing finance teams.

  • Demonstrated expertise in internal controls, financial reporting, and compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to manage complex financial systems and processes across a growing organization.

  • Proficiency in financial management software and Microsoft Office Suite; experience with systems integration or consolidation is a plus.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, follow-through, and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

  • Collaborative team player with excellent communication skills, able to engage diverse teams and stakeholders.

COMPENSATION

The salary range for this role is $110,000 - $120,000, plus a competitive benefits package.

LOCATION & TRAVEL

The Controller role is hybrid, requiring residence in the Midwest. Regular travel to visit schools in the two states and meet with the CFO and team based in Cincinnati will be expected, averaging one to two days quarterly. Additional school visits will be encouraged at the Controller’s discretion to strengthen school and team connections.
