Controller — Construction
Location: Omaha, NE | Company Size: ~$100M+ revenue | Work Setup: On-site (with reasonable flexibility)

The mandate
Stabilize and shorten month-end close. Own the GL, WIP, and reporting. Build a reliable AP/AR and staff accounting function. Tighten ERP usage (NetSuite preferred).

What you’ll own

  • Month-end close: calendar, cutoffs, accruals, reconciliations, journals. Deliver a clean P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow each month.

  • WIP & job cost: monthly WIP schedule, cost-to-complete, margin forecasts, over/under billings, change orders, retainage. Partner with PMs to explain variances.

  • GL integrity: chart of accounts hygiene; bank, credit card, AP/AR, inventory, fixed assets, leases.

  • Cash operations: billing cadence, collections, vendor terms, DSO/DPO tracking with clear actions.

  • Controls & policy: close checklist, approvals, documentation; coordinate audit and tax.

  • Team leadership: manage and develop staff accountants, AP, and AR; set SLAs, workflow, and cross-training; hire as needed.

  • Systems: NetSuite daily operations, roles/permissions, approvals, data quality. NetSuite implementation experience is a plus.

What success looks like in 3–6 months

  • Predictable close and a standard reporting pack for leadership and PMs.

  • Accurate, timely WIP and margin forecasts tied to field reality.

  • Stable AP/AR aging with clear ownership and cadence.

  • Less manual work in spreadsheets; tighter ERP processes.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years in accounting; 2–5 years in a senior or lead role.

  • Construction accounting experience with WIP, job cost, and percent-of-completion revenue recognition.

  • Proven GL ownership and month-end close leadership.

  • Experience managing transactional teams (AP, AR, staff accountants).

  • ERP proficiency; NetSuite preferred. NetSuite implementation exposure is a plus.

  • Bachelor’s in Accounting, Finance, or similar.

  • CPA is nice to have.

Nice to have

  • Multi-entity operations or self-perform trades experience.

  • Equipment/fleet accounting.

  • KPI design and process improvement work.
