Financial Controller - Residential / Property Management

Our client is currently seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to join their growing residential services and property management firm. This is a high-impact leadership role ideal for a CPA with deep accounting expertise and a passion for building efficient financial systems. The Controller will be responsible for establishing, scaling, and overseeing all accounting and reporting functions, ensuring compliance, driving financial transparency, and supporting long-term business growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build & lead the accounting department, including hiring and developing internal talent and establishing scalable processes and systems.
  • Design and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls in line with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage all general ledger activity, including month-end and year-end close, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
  • Own the budgeting and forecasting process in collaboration with executive leadership and operational teams.
  • Oversee AP/AR, payroll, property-level accounting, and vendor management.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial reports for management, investors, and regulatory bodies.
  • Coordinate and manage annual audits, tax filings, and other regulatory compliance activities.
  • Partner with Property Management and Operations teams to ensure accurate unit-level performance tracking and reporting.
  • Identify and implement technology solutions (e.g., Yardi, AppFolio, QuickBooks, or other property management/accounting systems) to improve efficiency and data integrity.
  • Lead financial due diligence and integration processes for new acquisitions or partnerships.

Qualifications

  • CPA required.
  • Accomplished accounting executive or current sitting Controller with unquestionable integrity, a strong work ethic, and a track record of leadership success.
  • 8+ years of combined public/private accounting experience, including 3–5 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Ideally experienced in residential services, property management, or real estate accounting environments.
  • Proven ability to build and scale accounting functions from the ground up, including ERP implementations, policy development, and team building.
  • Hands-on experience with consolidation, M&A accounting, and acquisition integrations, preferably in high-growth, multi-site, or acquisitive businesses.
  • Broad expertise in all areas of accounting, including GAAP compliance, controllership, financial reporting, treasury, tax, cost accounting, and management reporting systems.
  • Demonstrated success in implementing ERP systems and establishing internal accounting infrastructure and best practices.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and effectively.
  • Proven ability to collaborate across departments and positively influence teams at all levels of the organization.
  • Highly analytical, intellectually curious, and passionate about continuous improvement, team development, and mentorship.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, with strong aptitude for financial systems and reporting tools.
  • Willingness to travel to operational sites as needed to build relationships and ensure alignment between corporate and field-level accounting teams.



Compensation: $190,000 - 235,000 base
