About the Role
Our client is looking for a Sales Tax Manager to own and evolve our multi-state sales & use tax function. This is a hands-on role that combines technical expertise with operational execution across 37+ states and emerging international markets.
You’ll be our go-to expert for sales tax compliance, exemptions, nexus, and system optimization (Avalara)—all while supporting broader entity and license compliance as we grow.
Responsibilities:
- Manage multi-state sales & use tax compliance, filings, and payments.
- Oversee customer/vendor exemptions and certificate documentation.
- Advise on business licenses, contractor requirements, and insurance obligations.
- Conduct nexus analysis and oversee state registrations as they expand.
- Lead and optimize Avalara integrations across Finance and Operations.
- Support sales tax audits and manage relationships with external advisors.
- Assist with entity-level compliance (Secretary of State filings, CT Corp, etc.).
- Contribute to international expansion projects (Europe, Canada, Asia).
- Collaborate cross-functionally to identify issues and drive proactive solutions.
Requirements:
- 5–10 years of state & local tax (SALT) experience.
- Background in Big 4 or large regional public accounting; in-house experience a plus.
- Hands-on experience with Avalara is a required.
- Deep knowledge of sales & use tax, exemptions, and nexus.
- Experience in project-based industries like IT services, construction, or infrastructure is ideal.
- CPA, JD, MST/LLM in Tax preferred (not required).
- Strong problem-solving skills, curiosity, and the drive to dig in and figure things out.
- Professional maturity and the ability to partner cross-functionally.
Compensation: $120,000 - 165,000 base
