Job Duties:

The open position is for a new Embedded Software Engineer to be a member of the rapid prototyping group. The rapid prototyping group is a fast-paced engineering environment focused on quickly developing and demonstrating new capabilities. Typical projects last 6 months with multiple projects in progress simultaneously. The successful candidate works in a team environment to design, implement, integrate and test embedded software for inclusion in software defined radio applications. The successful candidate has a broad skillset and is comfortable working on a variety of platforms. The engineer is expected to lead significant design work, have the capacity for self-directed work and work with only general technical oversight. The role requires the application of the principles and techniques of computer science, engineering and mathematical analysis. The engineer may work with customers and non-technical managers to identify customer needs and use cases, and analyze software requirements to determine feasibility of designs within time and cost constraints. The design lead cooperates with electrical, RF engineers and other engineering staff to evaluate interfaces between hardware and software, and operational performance requirements of the overall system. The engineer develops system testing procedures, programming and documentation as required. The engineer understands basic principles and technical concepts and is required to apply theory to practice. Creativity in problem solving is expected.


  • Bachelor’s degree (Computer / Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Math) and 6 or more years’ experience and strong proficiency with C/C++, object-oriented design, real-time, multi-threaded programming.
  • 3 or more years as a software feature designer or task lead.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Master’s degree (Computer / Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Math).
  • Familiarity with RTOS, such as QNX or Green Hills Integrity.
  • Familiar with Windows and Linux computing environments.
  • Familiarity with networking protocols design and implementation, particularly at layer 1-3 of the OSI model.
  • Familiarity with user interface design and design for usability concepts.
  • Ability to quickly analyze and modify large and complex existing software to add new capabilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment; good interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written)
  • Understanding of the design, implementation and test of large software systems.
  • Familiarity with implementing software in an embedded environment, including but not limited to Android development, embedded web technologies, embedded security technologies.
  • Familiarity with RF concepts and technology.
  • Familiarity with code and process management concepts (CMMI) and tools (e.g., Code Collaborator, SVN, DOORS).
