Senior Scientist: Lithium-Sulfer Battery Development

IMPEL TALENT LTD - Berlin, GER, Germany

Impel Talent is leading the search for a highly motivated and experienced Senior Scientist with a strong background in cathode development for lithium-sulfur batteries. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Electrochemistry, or a related field, and have 5+ years of hands-on experience specifically focused on lithium-sulfur battery research.

In this role, you will be instrumental in developing advanced cathode architectures and evaluating their electrochemical performance. You’ll join a dynamic and collaborative team that is driving innovation in next-generation lithium-sulfur battery technology. Your work will directly support the research, design, development, and implementation of our client’s core technology and its scaling and commercialization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop highly ordered sulfur cathode architectures using advanced material processing techniques.
  • Design and implement testing protocols to evaluate performance, cycle life, and stability of cathode materials in pouch cells.
  • Perform ex-situ and in-situ analyses (e.g., EIS, CV, SEM, XPS) to understand battery behavior and degradation mechanisms.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including materials scientists, chemists, electrochemists, and engineers.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate progress, results, and challenges to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to intellectual property development, including patent filings based on novel discoveries.
  • Support the scale-up and commercialization efforts for lithium-sulfur battery technologies across multiple teams.

Your Profile

  • PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in lithium-sulfur battery R&D, with specific expertise in pouch cell development.
  • Deep knowledge of sulfur-based cathode materials, including mitigation strategies for polysulfide shuttling, enhancing energy density, and improving cycle life.
  • Proficient in material characterization techniques such as EIS, CV, SEM, XPS, and other relevant methods.
  • Demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications and/or patent contributions.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional environments.
