Senior Maritime Trainer in Ghana

--> You will work directly with the Ghanian Navy at the Takoradi Naval Training Facility located at the southernmost tip of Ghana - right on the beach! After a day of training, you can relax and enjoy the beach views from the shared house where the Maritime Training Team resides. <--

Are you looking to make a global difference in bilateral cooperation and instructional development?

Currently seeking Maritime Maintenance Trainer/Mentors to provide maritime maintenance training in Ghana to the Ghanaian Navy (GN). The position will require the selected Trainer/Mentor to deploy to Ghana for a 6-month training assignment.

Compensation Information:

The assignment is 100% in country

- Part Time

- Flexible rotation, from a minimum of 2 weeks to up to 5 months

- 5 day work week, hours and days vary but it's 40 hours - may include Sat but no more than 40hrs a week


- RATE: will depend on candidate experience and the amount of time they will be in Ghana - $400-$500 per day for days worked (training days). Per diem will be $500 per month for full months and prorated depending on if they are there less than a month’s time.
- Will be a 1099 Independent contractor and must send invoices to get paid
- Shared Team house with transportation covered

- Laundry and house cleaning covered

--> Airfare, lodging, transportation, medical coverage for emergencies in Ghana/while working is all covered.

--> Must have US passport and must have (or be willing to obtain) the COVID vaccination and (be willing to obtain) Yellow fever vaccination valid. The Yellow fever must be on a yellow shot card.

--> Need an availability to start in March 2025

The training location, Ghana Navy “School of Marine Engineering”, is located 100 miles from Accra. The opportunity will provide Trainer’s access to pristine beaches, sixteen national parks, numerous safaris, several UNESCO World Heritage Sites and on of the premier locations for travel on the African continent!

About the Program: The Africa Maritime Security Initiative (AMSI) program aims to improve African partners' maritime governance and enforcement, sustainment and preventive maintenance, and regional interoperability by building their capacity to address threats such as transnational organized crime; piracy; armed robbery at sea; illegal fishing; and the trafficking of arms, drugs, and persons. These illegal maritime activities contribute to regional instability and enable transnational illegal and extremist organizations to operate. Failure to address these threats jeopardizes economic development in Africa and compromises trade opportunities for the United States.

About the Project: The project implementer will:

1) Develop new maritime maintenance curricula for Ghanaian Navy (GN) training institutions,

2) Deliver training to a cadre of maritime maintenance technicians, and

3) Identify, train, and mentor a cadre of instructors to implement future iterations of the maritime maintenance course.

GN maritime maintenance technicians are currently generalists and will complete all 6 curricula. This broad-spectrum maritime maintenance training will support the GN to maintain higher operational readiness rates of maritime security equipment.

Trainer/Mentor for Maritime Maintenance: The Trainer/Mentor is responsible for conducting training on topics listed below. Trainer/Mentor shall report to the Senior Trainer.

The focus for the maritime training is on Defender and Protector Class Ships that patrol seaways. Work is at the Ghanaian Naval Training Center in Takoradi, Ghana. This will be classroom and hands-on ship instruction.

Minimum Requirements:

->Service in the US Navy or United States Coast Guard required.

  • Trainer/Mentor candidates should be able to provide classroom and hands-on based training and mentorship in AT LEAST ONE OF below topic areas:
    • Basic Information Technology Maintenance: Maintaining, managing, and coordinating information systems security across platforms and fleets, Designing, installing, and operating wide-area-networks, computer systems, and associated devices. network system administration, maintenance, and training. Managing network security. Installing applications, troubleshooting user problems, and providing training and assistance with use of computer hardware and software.
    • Basic Electronics Maintenance: Maintaining, repairing, calibrating, tuning, and adjusting navigation equipment. Operating, monitoring, and maintaining radar (monitors, arrays, processors, displays), gyrocompasses, inertial navigation, and global positioning systems. Maintaining equipment to detect, identify, and track other maritime vessels. Maintaining power supplies, generator electronics, wiring, weatherproofing, and load management. Conducting preventative maintenance on interior communications circuitry.
    • Basic Machinery: Installing, repairing, operating, and maintaining various types of machinery and machine components, including, but not limited to primary movers (engines, portable engines, thrusters), boat engines, and generators.

    • Basic Marine Electrician: maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing shipboard electrical wiring and systems. Testing low and high- voltage circuit systems for safety, etc.

  • Prior service in the US Navy or United States Coast Guard required.
  • Current Passport with at least 6 months left on it.
  • A demonstrated experience training or instructing.
  • Ability to work country in Ghana
