Purpose of Position:

The Quality Control Supervisor’s primary function is to ensure the efficient conversion of logs to lumber. This position is responsible for recommending methods to improve safety, quality, throughput and uptime. Additionally, they will have a good working knowledge of sawmill equipment from an optimization, controls and mechanical point of view. This includes finding solutions for complex problems, continually search for process improvements, and researching technical details behind the processes used.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Ensure proper sawmilling techniques are used to maximize production, lumber recovery and grade yield.
  • Develop, recommend, implement and evaluate performance improvements through quality assurance and quality control procedures and standards to ensure accurate and relevant information on log processing and lumber manufacturing quality, size, species, and sawmill conversion factors.
  • Facilitate technology transfer and support the mill with troubleshooting and achieving optimum processes, performance and higher product quality.
  • Evaluate and modify program optimizers and machine centers, if necessary.
  • Responsible for maintaining and improving appearance and quality of finished product.
  • Conduct size control checks and grade checks.
  • Perform off-site inventory and grade out-turn checks.
  • Work closely with Sawmill Supervisors to ensure maximum production and efficiency.
    • Read, understand and follow safe work procedures.
    • Monitor reman levels.
    • Monitor the break down, handling, transporting and inventory of rough stock.
    • Work with supervisors of maintenance (mechanical and electrical) to ensure optimal performance and efficiency of maintenance activities (mechanical & electrical).
    • Attend production and planning meetings as required.

    Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

    • Good understanding of lumber quality control standards;
    • 3 - 5+ years’ equivalent experience;
    • Formal PLC training with a strong electrical and mechanical aptitude;
    • Strong analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills;
    • Ability to exercise a high level of professionalism;
    • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines;
