Mainframe Systems Engineer Job Description

Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance and eligibility for a Secret clearance
- Remote position with occasional onsite meetings in the DMV area
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of relevant experience, or 12+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree
- Extensive knowledge of z/OS Mainframe operations, including proficiency with MVS/JES/USS Commands, WLM, JCL, REXX, CLIST, SDSF, TSO/ISPF, IPCS, Unix, STC’s, batch processing, and gathering documentation for IBM support
- Skilled in using z/OS mainframe tools such as LRS VPS/DRS, MVS Quick Ref, Connect Direct, TN3270 (Rumba & Reflection), and FTP Client Software
- Familiarity with mainframe hardware and software upgrade processes
- Experience in z/OS mainframe Disaster Recovery, including fail-over and fail-back operations to/from a DR site
- Proven ability to collaborate with IBM developers and software vendors to address software errors and performance issues
- Knowledge of auditing requirements
- Strong problem-solving skills with expertise in Root Cause Analysis for system issues
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities effectively
Responsibilities
- Oversee and maintain all mainframe system operations
- Install, configure, and upgrade mainframe software and hardware to ensure operational continuity
- Monitor and analyze system performance, recommending and implementing optimizations
- Conduct routine system checks, troubleshoot issues, and resolve faults promptly
- Develop and document procedures for managing mainframe software and systems
- Work closely with IT teams to ensure seamless integration of hardware and software systems
- Manage system backups and establish robust data recovery protocols
- Provide technical support and guidance to users on mainframe operations
- Maintain detailed documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides
- Ensure system security by applying the latest updates, patches, and security standards
- Develop and maintain disaster recovery procedures for mainframe systems
- Collaborate with developers and analysts to resolve application and system issues
- Participate in an on-call rotation, supporting extended hours, weekends, and emergencies as needed
- Document system changes and maintain accurate configuration records
- Stay current with emerging mainframe technologies and industry advancements
