Mainframe Systems Engineer Job Description

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance and eligibility for a Secret clearance
  • Remote position with occasional onsite meetings in the DMV area

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of relevant experience, or 12+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree
  • Extensive knowledge of z/OS Mainframe operations, including proficiency with MVS/JES/USS Commands, WLM, JCL, REXX, CLIST, SDSF, TSO/ISPF, IPCS, Unix, STC’s, batch processing, and gathering documentation for IBM support
  • Skilled in using z/OS mainframe tools such as LRS VPS/DRS, MVS Quick Ref, Connect Direct, TN3270 (Rumba & Reflection), and FTP Client Software
  • Familiarity with mainframe hardware and software upgrade processes
  • Experience in z/OS mainframe Disaster Recovery, including fail-over and fail-back operations to/from a DR site
  • Proven ability to collaborate with IBM developers and software vendors to address software errors and performance issues
  • Knowledge of auditing requirements
  • Strong problem-solving skills with expertise in Root Cause Analysis for system issues
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities effectively

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and maintain all mainframe system operations
  • Install, configure, and upgrade mainframe software and hardware to ensure operational continuity
  • Monitor and analyze system performance, recommending and implementing optimizations
  • Conduct routine system checks, troubleshoot issues, and resolve faults promptly
  • Develop and document procedures for managing mainframe software and systems
  • Work closely with IT teams to ensure seamless integration of hardware and software systems
  • Manage system backups and establish robust data recovery protocols
  • Provide technical support and guidance to users on mainframe operations
  • Maintain detailed documentation of system configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides
  • Ensure system security by applying the latest updates, patches, and security standards
  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery procedures for mainframe systems
  • Collaborate with developers and analysts to resolve application and system issues
  • Participate in an on-call rotation, supporting extended hours, weekends, and emergencies as needed
  • Document system changes and maintain accurate configuration records
  • Stay current with emerging mainframe technologies and industry advancements
