J Harlan Group is currently conducting a search for an experienced and highly motivated Senior Data Engineer to join the Data Labs team at a prominent NYC Private Equity - Investment Manager.

An exciting opportunity to be a key part of the growth of the firm, funds and team and will work closely with senior members of the firm to evaluate and execute on investments within numerous asset classes and across the capital structure.

Labs is a new team formed to spin out data and technology products to the wider industry. Their mission is to bring to market the data and technology that has driven the investment company’s success. Labs' focus, much like that of the broader investment firm, started from the rail industry but it is rapidly expanding to the wider real asset investment space. The Labs mission is also about measuring both innovation methods and their impact, ensuring its innovation technology reduces the time, cost and risk of developing a business idea with the goals of increased optimization, strengthened scalability, and providing potential new revenue streams.

The Sr. Data Engineer will initially maintain and optimize the firm’s data collection and storing processes. You will work on the Labs team, advising on engineering and product needs and goals, and the resources (people, technology, etc.) needed to achieve them. You will initially work most closely with data science to develop data pipelines that can handle internal proprietary datasets, as well as external data feeds. You will own designing and implementing the architecture of the database system behind the funds reporting processes.

Additionally, you will also serve as a partner to the Chief Operating Officer of Labs to ideate, architect, and build their initial product suite and infrastructure, advising on how to productize applications and services powered by the firm’s powerful asset database and other acquired datasets.

This individual will be a significant contributor in enabling their vision and helping the organization to grow and improve their businesses. To be successful in this role you must be highly detail oriented and organized, able to meet assigned deadlines and have first class communication and interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design custom solutions for ingesting, annotating and curating proprietary datasets
  • Build distributed, high-volume data pipelines that will contribute to Labs’ growing technical product suite for internal and external customers
  • Supervise and maintain the firm’s data management cloud platform
  • Continually optimize the firm’s database to handle data ingestion efficiently
  • Advise, lead, and implement best practices pertaining to technical management, security, and storage
  • Evaluate their current data management and pipeline process, and advise and own appropriate next steps
  • Recruit and build a technical team that will work in an agile environment allowing for an iterative approach to building and launching
  • Collaborate with the COO and Data Science to develop the product roadmap based on business and operational strategy and goals

The ideal candidate would have a background including:

  • 5+ years of experience working with data in an engineering capacity
  • Built and operated data pipelines for real customers in production systems, with emphasis on data quality and security
  • Fluent in several programming languages (JVM & otherwise)
  • Enjoy wrangling huge amounts of data and exploring new data sets
  • Value code simplicity and performance
  • Experience deploying and maintaining a cloud based platform (AWS/Azure/Google Cloud)
  • Work with fundamental programming languages as well as scripting languages
  • A product thinker – accel at visualizing and translating data into product with the user at the forefront
  • Intuitive leader who is confident in your decision-making, unafraid to take calculated risks and iterate
  • Full-stack experience and are comfortable learning new languages and methodologies
  • You are a self-starter who can work independently and drive a process from start to finish
  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage a process from start to finish with true ownership in areas that might be new to both the individual and even the firm

Education:

Strong academic record and a bachelor’s or higher degree in engineering or related scientific field
