J Harlan Group is currently conducting a search for an experienced and highly motivated Data Analyst – Risk Management at a prominent NYC Private Equity - Investment Manager.

The firm is a leading investment manager specializing in the private equity sector, is looking for an Analyst to join its dynamic and rapidly growing Risk Management - Labs team in NY. Labs is the firm’s data platform and technology hub, formed in 2020 to optimize and scale data and technology products for its users Labs’ mission is to leverage data, increase optimization, and productize innovation. Their unique ability to collect, analyze and productize data – via proprietary data, public data, and data partnerships – informs and augments the firm’s ability to drive more opportunities across various investment strategies. The Risk Management Data Analyst will work as the “domain expert” for the Risk Management Team. You will also be a member of Labs and work closely with the existing data analysts and data engineers, ensuring that all data and analytics needs for Risk are addressed effectively. Whether it’s financial modeling, querying data to analyze credit or simply building a dashboard, you are the human touchpoint to data, enabling the team to answer business questions with data-driven solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

The Data Analyst – Risk Management will be responsible for:

  • Be solely focused on the Risk Management Team’s data needs, assisting with building and automating reporting, further enabling their ability to recognize opportunities to offset risk
  • Assist in the research, modeling and presentation of hedges and risk related trades, while using your data expertise to streamline the delivery and presentation of information
  • Lead the initial research of quantitative (interest rates, swaps, counterparty pricing trends, etc.) and qualitative (commodity trends, Fed policy, Firmwide assets, etc.) risk trends across all verticals
  • Track the administration, scheduling and performance of various hedges and risk related initiatives
  • Proactively monitor and optimize risk management strategies, utilizing and incorporating data-driven tools to direct the approach
  • Assist in collecting and standardizing the applicable data to monitor ongoing credit worthiness of the firm’s counterparties
  • Strategically work with Labs to ingest and standardize any new datasets that might enhance the firm’s ability to conduct further risk or counterparty credit analysis
  • Help design and monitor processes for testing all incoming data on a continual basis to ensure information delivery is accurate and timely
  • Work closely with Labs (product and engineering), utilizing data pipelines and turning data feeds into outputs that fit the Risk Team’s needs
  • Serve the Risk Team’s data requests with a “user first” mindset while liaising with product, engineering and data science to provide high quality responses
  • Assist in productionalizing data outputs using BI tools, such as PowerBI, or scripting languages such as Python/R

The ideal candidate would have a background including:

  • 1-2 years of experience working with large datasets within industries such as manufacturing, finance, freight/supply chain, or rail
  • A demonstrated understanding of mathematics and data, as well as spreadsheet principles and data slicing techniques
  • An in-depth knowledge of Excel
  • 1-2 years of experience with SQL
  • A demonstrated experience with managing models in PowerBI/Tableau
  • The ability to catch discrepancies in data, but you don’t get lost in the minutiae and have an ability to see the data story holistically
  • A desire to learn about finance, data analytics and industrial transportation
  • A “user first” mindset and understand the need to simplify for the user’s benefit
  • Excellent interpersonal (written and verbal) skills and a demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • The willingness to take on what’s needed to support the team, even if it is outside of your core responsibilities
  • Have a “start-up” mindset and as a result have a willingness to take on what’s needed to support the team, even if it is outside of your core responsibilities.
  • Tenacious and persistent, unafraid to ask questions and get to the bottom of challenges

Education:

  • Strong academic record and a bachelor’s or higher degree

Bonus but not mandatory:

  • Financial modeling
  • Coding in Python/R or other scripting languages
  • Working on credit analyses at a financial firm or bank
  • Leveraging tools like Bloomberg Terminal or CapIQ for credit analyses and/or other risk related projects
