J Harlan Group is currently conducting a search for a Director of Data at a prominent NYC Data Discovery Technology firm.

Their Data Discovery platform compresses the complex data discovery to analysis workflow from countless hours to minutes, saving clients time, energy, and budget in harnessing data to reach their analysis and business goals, all in one comprehensive platform suitable for technical and non-technical professionals alike. Their platform helps organizations across numerous sectors arm themselves with the data and data infrastructure to execute on their digital and data transformation initiatives, vital to long-term sustainability.

As the Director of Data, you will serve as the senior thought leader to internal and external constituents to ensure the firm’s data assets enable business outcomes.

You will be responsible for building amazing, market differentiated products that users love. You know the immense value of user and potential user input, yet you understand that users may not be able to imagine or know how to ask for the future we are trying to invent.

We are looking for an extraordinary individual with unusually high levels of customer empathy, who intuitively puts the user at the center of their decision making. You will have knowledge of the data ecosystem and the data supply chain and understand the common goals and problems of users within this ecosystem. You will delight in solving customer problems and designing elegant user experiences that create a community of users who are advocates for your product.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Delivers and maintains accurate, complete, and timely data sets to enable the company’s core business, ancillary products and services.
  • Manages the end-to-end data ingestion and release process.
  • Proactively identifies and implements processes and operational changes to the data operations and data engineering organizations while providing quantitative and qualitative metrics to assess quality and efficiency.
  • Drive the firm’s data acquisition strategy by establishing nimble processes, introducing innovative technical capabilities, and being proactive in anticipating future trends and business needs
  • Mitigates regulatory risks and legal exposures to the company by implementing controls and monitoring performance indicators that ensure the quality, accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of data sets.
  • Works closely with Risk, Legal, and Compliance for audits, regulatory reporting, and SOP improvements to enable effective responses and timely resolutions to issues.
  • Partners with the Chief Technology Officer to establish the next generation data architecture and technology ecosystem.
  • Leads the company’s efforts to ensure data accessibility, availability, and usability in a systematic manner. Executes technology initiatives with the IT organization by providing functional requirements and data analysis. Supports internal and external constituents with data research and certification.

The ideal candidate would have a background including:

  • 10+ years in industry. Exposure to markets relevant to product specialty. Management consulting or business development experience desired.
  • 10+ years in Specialty/Discipline. Expertise in data management, data engineering, data governance, and high-throughput data operations
  • Demonstrated strength in financial services, data, and/or technology product development from concept to commercialization.
  • Demonstrated strength in effective influencing, negotiation, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Strong public speaking skills and the ability to interact with people at all levels of an organization.
  • A highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and creatively as well as within a team.
  • Excellent networking skills are required in order to obtain market information necessary to anticipate customer needs and interpret the trends that are evolving in the markets the firm serves.
  • Track record of excelling in an environment of ambiguity by quickly adapting behavior and work methods to adjust to multiple demands and shifting priorities.
