J Harlan Group is currently conducting a search for a Database Engineer at a prominent NYC Hedge Fund.An individual with a strong commitment to building and maintaining scalable and creative core Database infrastructure technology solutions in support of a global investment organization.

Day-to-day tasks will revolve around maintaining databases, database servers, and database storage. There over 50 developers with varying degrees of SQL expertise, many of whom require a high level of expertise to complete their work and improve existing processes. Solutions are built using of best of class technologies, with the common expectation of an enterprise grade resiliency and performance.

The organization seeks a highly motivated and qualified Hands-On DBA who will be responsible for;

  • The design, maintenance, integration and operational support for a MSSQL environment
  • Continuously monitor performance of SQL servers, applications and schedule
  • Improving performance as well as establish performance baselines
  • Provide high-level database support and guidance to both the Development and Infrastructure teams There over 50 developers with varying degrees of SQL expertise, many require a high level of expertise to complete their work and improve existing processes.
  • Own, resolve, and track all database incidents and requests across production, UAT, and development environments.
  • Be responsible for ensuring data consistency and integrity across all database systems.
  • Work closely with other IT resources (e.g. Windows Engineering team, Network Administrators) to create and implement new applications and technologies
  • Implement and support production changes adherent to the change management/ release process
  • Manage, design and implement backup, recovery, and high-availability processes for all database systems
  • Solid experience with warehousing / OLAP design and support of related databases & cubes (SQL Analysis services (OLAP/Cubes)
  • Lead the application group in being a go-to resource on database upgrades while managing migrations to new applications, database upgrades/testing, new database servers.

A seasoned and professional computer scientist with extensive technical experience in developing and maintaining core database infrastructure technologies that will provide the firm with a distinct commercial advantage that will enable a host of opportunities that will differentiate the firm from their competitors.

The successful candidate will be capable of collaborating with the IT team on the development and deployment of systems and solutions. The successful candidate must be able to take ownership of multiple tasks and measure the work on those tasks against the work of the group to complete larger tasks successfully with a minimum of daily supervision.

The ideal candidate would have the following background:

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in computer science or related field or equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience working as a Database Administrator in a fast paced, high intensity environment; financial services experience/exposure
    • SQL Server administration
    • Query writing(TSQL)
    • Querytuning
    • SQL Server performancetuning
    • AlwaysOn Availability andclustering
    • Replication Technologies (SQL Server and Storagebased)
  • A demonstrated proficiency in supporting the database platform of a large organization
  • Flexibility to support the operations of our businesses 24/7
  • Capacity to multi-task under pressure
  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / Information Technology or equivalent experience
  • Ability to quickly troubleshoot and resolve complex problems in a live environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to articulate complex ideas and solutions to management
  • Proficiency in multi-dimensional database structures, database design and database administration
  • Experience with data migration, data warehousing and SSIS ETL fundamentals
  • Experience with Open Source Technologies, i.e. Cassandra, etc.
  • Expert knowledge and in-depth experience with the Microsoft platform and the following technologies:
    • MS SQL Server
    • MS SQL Server Analysis Services
    • MS SQL Server Integration Services
    • Linked Servers / linked databases
    • Performance Monitoring tools such as SQL Profiler, Idera or SQLSentry
  • Proficiency in MySQL database administration is a “plus”
  • Self-motivation with the ability to work independently and as a strong team player
