J Harlan Group is currently conducting a search for a Database Engineer / Architect at a prominent Global Investment firm in NYC. An individual with a strong commitment to building and maintaining scalable and creative core Database infrastructure technology solutions in support of a global investment organization.

Our client seeks a database engineer to join its Infrastructure Engineering team. This engineer will be tasked with the design, implementation, and integration of database platforms and automation on Windows- and Linux-based systems. This is a hands-on technical role within a cross-platform engineering team responsible for core technology infrastructure.

Principal Responsibilities:

The database engineer will be responsible for owning and building out the existing database environment, workflows, and automation while working closely with a global team of database administrators. This engineer will work with other members of Infrastructure Engineering to provide self-service and automation-driven solutions. They will also work with software developers and trading teams to optimize and scale applications and software that pertain to database access.

The candidate will cultivate and maintain a world-class database platform to deliver and support mission critical solutions for a global financial institution.

A seasoned and professional computer scientist with extensive technical experience in developing and maintaining core database infrastructure technologies that will provide the firm with a distinct commercial advantage that will enable a host of opportunities that will differentiate the firm from their competitors.

The successful candidate will be capable of collaborating with the IT team on the development and deployment of systems and solutions. The successful candidate must be able to take ownership of multiple tasks and measure the work on those tasks against the work of the group to complete larger tasks successfully with a minimum of daily supervision.

The ideal candidate would have the following background:

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in computer science or related field or equivalent experience.
  • An in-depth knowledge of at least one database platform and working knowledge of other platforms—such as SQL Server, Postgres, Redis, MongoDB, or Cassandra—is required.
  • Experience and proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, and C# is preferred, as is working knowledge of networking protocols, information security concepts, and operating system internals.
  • Outstanding communication skills are imperative, as the role will entail significant interaction with different departments in the firm.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to articulate complex ideas and solutions to management
  • Self-motivation with the ability to work independently and as a strong team player
