J Harlan Group is currently conducting a search for a Data Engineer - Trading at a prominent NYC Hedge Fund.

As a member of the firm’s Trading team the Data Engineer will be heavily involved in building capabilities to transform large amounts of structured and unstructured data such as text, time series, and events into machine-readable knowledge fueling applications and the investment decision making process. This is a very young team, enabling you to make an impact from the onset.

The Data Engineer will participate in the building of next generation data analysis platforms and will be responsible for the ingestion and processing of large, disparate datasets and application of advanced statistical and machine learning methods to produce models and prescriptive data that result in better decisions by their Portfolio Managers, Analysts, and Traders, Quants and / or applications.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy elegant software solutions supporting the trading environment
  • Partner with investment professionals to define priorities and deliver custom solutions
  • Engineer world-class products with maximum efficiency and agility
  • Enable improvement through shaping of tools, processes and standards
  • Adopt new technologies to improve existing frameworks of data flow and monitoring
  • Interact with Investment professionals to understand their workflows and requirements
  • Collaborate with front office engineers to enable a fit-for-purpose application portfolio consistent with the target architecture and operating model
  • Produce comprehensive, usable dataset documentation and metadata
  • Ensure excellent customers relationships

Requirements:

  • A degree in Computer Science Statistics or related discipline
  • Strong problem solving and communication skills

They'll expect you to arrive with these skills—

  • Proficiency in Python and analytic packages such as Numpy, Pandas, Scikit-Learn
  • Proficiency in SQL

    The following further qualifications would help you succeed, though they expect a talented individual will be able to acquire them as needed.

  • processing big data with Python using Spark, Dask, Blaze
  • OLAP with AWS Redshift, Google BigQuery
  • ETL orchestration with Apache Airflow, AWS Glue, or Google Dataflow
