J Harlan Group is currently conducting a search for a Data Engineer at a prominent Global Hedge Fund in NYC.

The Data Engineering team is at the forefront of innovation as they embark on building capabilities to transform large amounts of structured and unstructured data such as text, time series, and events into machine-readable knowledge fueling applications and the investment decision making process. This is a very young team, enabling you to make an impact from the onset.

They’re looking for a Python ETL Data Engineer to join their team. They want technologists with a fresh perspective who are passionate about solving complex business, data and technical challenges.

You’ll work with smart, talented people across their business to create groundbreaking, next-generation data intensive applications for n-tier cloud architectures. You’ll be involved, hands-on, through the entire development cycle.

Principal Responsibilities:

The team is tasked with building next generation data analysis pipelines and platforms and are responsible for the ingestion and processing of large, disparate datasets and application of advanced statistical and machine learning methods to produce models and prescriptive data that result in better decisions by their Portfolio Managers, Analysts, and Traders, Quants and / or applications.

  • Build automated ETL pipelines to support rapid but controlled transition of structured and unstructured data
  • Design, develop, test, and deploy elegant data intensive software solutions across the firm
  • Partner with business leaders to define priorities and deliver custom solutions
  • Engineer world-class products with maximum efficiency and agility
  • Enable improvement of the engineering team through shaping of tools, processes and standards
  • Adopt new technologies to improve existing frameworks of data flow and monitoring
  • Interact with Investment professionals to understand their workflows and requirements
  • Produce comprehensive, usable dataset documentation and metadata
  • Evaluate and make decisions around dataset implementations designed and proposed by peer data engineers
  • Ensure excellent customers relationships

The ideal candidate would have a background and a deep passion for working with data and developing software to address data processing challenges

  • Strong computer science and technical background with 5+ years of data engineering experience and an interest in working with data. (prior experience with big data sets preferred)
  • Experience with designing and implementing data processing pipelines
  • Experience using distributed computing frameworks
  • An interest in financial markets (with prior experience a big plus)
  • Programming skills required - proficiency in Python and ETL
  • Ability to work in an open collaborative and highly charged trading floor environment.
  • Strong desire to contribute and build a business – not just solve novel problems.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of users – traders, portfolio managers, research analysts, quants and the wider investment management team to develop and implement technology in support of a dynamically growing Hedge fund platform
