We are looking for a Data Engineer III to be the join their rapidly growing team Product & Technology group. This group has grown from 5 to 20 people in just the last 8 months, with expectations to be over 30 by year end. SUMMARY

The Data Engineer III is a senior-level role for experienced professionals with a deep understanding of data engineering principles and significant hands-on experience in architecting, implementing, and optimizing scalable data solutions. This role is expected to lead complex data engineering initiatives, contribute to architectural and strategic data decisions, and help evolve best practices across the team.

The ideal candidate will have advanced proficiency in SQL, Python, cloud environments, and data warehousing technologies. This individual will serve as a technical mentor, collaborate across departments, and drive innovation in data engineering approaches.

The tech stack includes SQL, Python, AWS, Snowflake, and Power BI.

KEY OUTCOMES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Outcome: Develop scalable, strategic data infrastructure
Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, development, and deployment of complex data pipelines and large-scale ETL/ELT systems

  • Architect efficient and scalable data solutions that support business intelligence, analytics, and data science needs.

  • Define and enforce best practices for data modeling, code quality, testing, and performance tuning.

  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for high-impact, business-critical data issues and production incidents.

  • Ensure enterprise-level data quality, integrity, and security with governance standards.

  • Evaluate and integrate new tools, frameworks, and technologies that enhance the data platform.

  • Drive automation and innovation in data processes and workflows.

Key Outcome: Technical and cross-functional leadership
Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with engineering, analytics, and product teams to define and deliver on data needs and initiatives.

  • Act as a senior advisor on architectural decisions, ensuring alignment with long-term data strategy.

  • Lead technical planning for sprints and initiatives, including estimation, resource planning, and risk mitigation.

  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior and mid-level data engineers.

  • Facilitate code reviews with a focus on knowledge sharing and technical excellence.

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement through documentation, learning sessions, and process optimization.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Author and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for data systems and architectures.

  • Lead complex integration efforts involving external systems and third-party APIs.

  • Partner with leadership to define and track KPI’s for the data engineering team.

  • Represent the data engineering team in cross-functional meetings and strategic planning sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

    • 5+ years of experience in data engineering or a related field.

    • Advanced proficiency in SQL and experience with relational databases.

    • Proven experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) and data warehousing technologies (e.g., Snowflake).

    • Expert-level understanding of data integration techniques and ETL/ELT processes.

    • Proficiency in Python and automation of data workflows.

    • Strong experience in building resilient, scalable data pipelines across complex data ecosystems.

    • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to influence stakeholders.

  • Preferred:

    • Experience with big data frameworks (e.g., Spark, Kafka).

    • Proficiency in data visualization tools such as Power BI.

    • Experience with infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation).

    • Exposure to DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines

    • Prior experience in mentoring, coaching, or leading teams.

    • Familiarity with Agile development tools and methodologies (e.g., JIRA, Confluence)

COMPENSATION

Our client is committed to providing pay transparency of their compensation philosophy and ensuring equitable pay practices for their employee owners. The compensation range for this position is $95,000- $133,000 and represents the annual salary range in Rochester, NY.

In addition to base compensation, other elements including ESOP (employee stock ownership plan), an annual bonus as well as 401(k) contributions add up to about 20% in additional compensation factors. They also offer a full benefits package, and paid time off benefits, including 100% paid parental leave.
