The Senior HR Manager leads both strategic and tactical activities associated with key HR functions including performance management, employee relations and the development and implementation of HR policies and procedures. The position supports a population of approximately exempt and non-exempt employees located in multiple states and has supervisory responsibility for one HR staff position.


  • Manages and develops HR related programs to effectively support Ocean Conservancy’s HR operations. This includes effective talent acquisition, organizational culture, employee experience, talent development, performance management, diversity equity and inclusion to name a few. These programs will fuel and facilitate the hiring and retention of highly productive and effective staff at all levels.

  • Designs new ways to effectively orientate new employees including planning key touchpoints and collecting data on employee experiences.

  • Develops and implements Human Resources policies and practices that support a healthy organizational culture; directs the implementation, interpretation and application of policies and practices to ensure equity and consistency.

  • Stays abreast of relevant developments and changes in employment law to ensure that Ocean Conservancy policies and practices are up to date and effective for all states in which OC employs staff.

  • Resolves sensitive employee relations issues with the goal of promoting a positive and inclusive work environment characterized by high employee morale.

  • Directs the annual organization-wide performance evaluation process and promotions; provides ongoing coaching and counseling to Managers and staff regarding performance management.

  • Supports the organizational communications efforts related to Human Resources messaging, with a particular focus on content development for the organization’s (Fintranet) intranet. Provides and addresses updates to Fintranet HR site up to ensure that information and messaging is relevant.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief People and Culture Officer


  • 10+ years’ demonstrated success in senior level, hands on HR role.

  • Strong experience in talent acquisition, establishing training and development programs, culture building and retention.

  • Strong understanding of employment laws; ability to research and stay up to date on HR and compliance changes for multiple states.

  • Ability to review policies and practices and identify gaps and revisions needed. Able update practices and policies to support relevance, equity and efficiencies

  • An effective project leader who is attentive to details and adheres strictly to deadlines and deliverables.

  • High ethical standards and ability to maintain absolute confidentiality in all employee situations.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills capable of reaching across organizational hierarchies and structures.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

  • Ability to develop and administer realistic budgets, solid understanding of the financial impact of HR programs and services.

  • Proficient HR software acumen and mature computer skills to include Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Applicant Tracking, Project & Performance Management and Training

  • Experience with ADP software or similar HRIS system.

  • Non-profit experience in a similar organizational structure and size a plus.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or closely related discipline. HRCI or SHRM Certifications a plus.


Ocean Conservancy is committed to equity in its pay practices and posts the minimum and midpoint of the range for each of its open positions. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and commensurate with the skills, years of experience and unique background of the candidate. Salary minimum is $112,200; salary midpoint is $140,300. Salary may be higher as appropriate for the selected candidate, with internal equity being considered.
