ABOUT OCEAN CONSERVANCY

Ocean Conservancy works to protect the ocean from today’s greatest global challenges. Together with our partners, we create evidence-based solutions for a healthy ocean and the wildlife and communities that depend on it.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) is the world’s largest collective impact alliance dedicated to solving one of the most critical challenges facing our ocean today – that of abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear (ALDFG or “ghost gear”). The GGGI is a collaborative, cross-sectoral alliance of stakeholders from fishing industry, private sector, non-governmental organizations, intergovernmental organizations, corporations, governments, and academia dedicated to tackling ALDFG at a global scale. Launched in September 2015 and founded on the best available science and technology, the GGGI aims to improve the health of marine ecosystems, protect marine life from harm, and safeguard human health and livelihoods. The GGGI’s strength lies in the diversity of its ~135 member organizations, including the official support from 20 governments, and many intergovernmental organizations.

Reporting to The Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) Associate Director, the GGGI Membership Manager serves as the first point-of contact for GGGI members and is responsible for continued engagement of GGGI members in the academic, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), technology, and private sector spaces The Membership Manager provides day-to-day communications with GGGI members in conjunction with Ocean Conservancy’s communications experts, and leads the initiation of membership including any due diligence required. The Membership Manager also conducts positive outreach to prospective new members where strategically appropriate to grow the GGGI membership in a manageable fashion in line with the GGGI’s multi-year strategy. The Membership Manager will work closely with the broader Ocean Conservancy Programs team to continue to expand and enhance the GGGI and build a stronger public movement against “ghost gear”.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure GGGI members are actively and positively engaged in the GGGI through oversight and active management of our membership.
  • Communicate regularly with GGGI members and offer support where appropriate and within the context of the GGGI platform to increase the global impact of the GGGI.
  • Lead on the identification, recruitment and initiation of new members together with the GGGI Associate Director, including managing the prospective membership survey and any due diligence required.
  • Participate in planning and execution of the GGGI related events including the Annual General Meeting in collaboration with other GGGI staff.
  • Assist with writing, reviewing and reporting on grant proposals, contracts and deliverables; and support project development as required.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with external organizations and teams within Ocean Conservancy and in the wider ocean plastics community to pursue Initiative objectives.
  • Support wider organizational goals, including those relating to brand, communications, fundraising and resource management.
  • Under the oversight of the GGGI Associate Director, contribute to the creation of the GGGI Annual Report.
  • Effectively collaborate with Ocean Conservancy’s communications team to develop communications materials and assets to promote the GGGI and its members where appropriate.
  • Represent Ocean Conservancy and GGGI at external engagements.
  • Actively participate in building the GGGI brand and maintain the integrity of the brand to support its profile, member recruitment and engagement.
  • Create and maintain positive and constructive working relationships with key external stakeholders including research institutions, governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, to build, grow and sustain the program.
