A key Optimus power generation client located in downtown Houston needs a Sr. Commercial Asset Manager with a Northeast focus (PJM a must), to support optimization of their physical power generation asset portfolio.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee daily Day-Ahead market bidding and manage cash and term strategies for natural gas, oil, and renewable energy generation assets, adapting to market fluctuations.
  • Responsible for the profit and loss (PnL) management of assigned assets.
  • Execute hedging strategies within set authority limits while effectively managing credit and cash obligations in line with risk management policies.
  • Collaborate with plant operations, third-party energy managers, and fuel suppliers to optimize trading and operational efficiency.
  • Acquire in-depth knowledge of asset contracts to ensure optimal oversight and utilization of contractual rights and responsibilities.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant tariffs, market conduct rules, and operational protocols.
  • Develop both short-term and long-term market outlooks, forecasting prices for power, fuel, and emissions to inform trading and hedging strategies.
  • Lead strategic initiatives for assigned assets, preparing and presenting findings to senior management.
  • Contribute to mergers and acquisitions and development strategies for potential transactions.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Proficiency in database management and advanced Excel skills.
  • Previous experience in commercial operations or asset trading, specifically with conventional or renewable generation assets.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. natural gas, electricity, and emissions markets, including their supply-demand dynamics and regulatory framework.
  • Familiarity with the specific market factors affecting individual generation assets and the broader portfolio.
  • Experience managing PnL for conventional or renewable generation assets.
  • Solid knowledge of market structures such as PJM (preferred), ISO-NE, NYISO, or MISO.
  • Background in power trading, hedge strategy formulation for natural gas-fired generation, and natural gas market dynamics.
  • Expertise in commodity risk management analysis.
  • Self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset, capable of performing under pressure.
  • Strong team player who thrives in a collaborative environment.
  • Excellent business acumen and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Commitment to ethical conduct and maintaining discretion and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and advanced Excel, with skills in VBA, PowerPoint, and SQL. Experience with Python, R, MATLAB, C/C#/C++, or Java is a plus.
