Commodities Accountant

Optimus - Houston, TX

A key Optimus client is adding a commodities accountant to their expanding team. This is a unique opportunity to join a high performing team focused on domestic and international trading of crude, petrochemicals and refined products, contributing as a strong team player with regard to ensuring all customer transactions are properly captured, analyzed, invoices and reported. Excellent communication skills are required as this role will work heavily with external customers as well as key internal functions including logistics and commercial trading.

Position responsibilities will include:

  • Review and input transaction data including division order and transportation tickets (pipeline, rail, truck, barge and vessel)
  • Create and maintain monthly run statements
  • Analyze and reconcile internal balances against third party supplier reports
  • Process monthly severance tax information
  • Prepare regulatory reporting based on state requirements
  • Identify opportunities for business process improvement, automation or increased controls
  • Prepare ad hoc reporting or analysis as needed

Requirements:

  • 2 or more years' experience in energy trading focused accounting. Refined products, crude, petrochemicals, or natural gas is ideal.
  • An understanding of one or more of the following transportation methods; pipeline, trucking, rail, barge or vessel. International waterborne experience is ideal.
  • Strong MS Excel and the ability to work with large data sets
  • Strong problem solving and reconciliation skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or similar discipline
  • The ability to speak Spanish is a plus
