Research Scientist (Contract)

Precision Life Sciences - Waltham, MA

Our client is seeking a contract Research Scientist. The client has an excellent opportunity for a highly talented biologist with a strong background in cell / molecular biology. The scientist level position is currently as a contract research scientist for 12 months with the possibility of renewal.

We are seeking a highly motivated and interactive bench scientist to join our team focused on oncology target validation and drug discovery. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work across a matrix environment and will play a key role in the advancement of the next wave of targets into preclinical drug development at the Company. The candidate will demonstrate clear and professional verbal and written communication skills and will be proficient in communicating data and results across multidisciplinary teams.

This is predominantly a laboratory/wet bench-based role and requires strong experimental technique, the ability to deliver quality data in a timely manner, and work effectively with team members, both internal and external (CRO) in support of Company target validation and drug discovery efforts. The scientist will support genetic and pharmacological validation of novel targets, development of cell-based novel assays for providing in vitro ‘proof of concept’ for targets of interest, phenotypic and mechanistic assay development using cutting edge technologies to support screening cascades and/or prosecuting functional roles of targets in secondary assays of biological relevance e.g., human primary tumor tissues. Familiarity with disease mechanisms in Oncology and Immuno-Oncology is mandatory and some familiarity with neurobiology is desirable. Data analysis, interpretation, documentation, and presentation skills are required.

Key responsibilities of this role are included, but are not limited to:

  • Design, execute and perform data analysis for cell-based experiments
  • Develop and execute plate-based cellular assays in medium – to high-throughput (96/384 well) assay formats. The assays include viability assays, proliferation assays (2D, chlorogenic), flow cytometric assays, and assays that are currently in development on an as-needed basis.
  • Perform molecular techniques including DNA/ RNA isolation, cloning, PCR, qRT-PCR, and gene expression analysis. Generate and maintain stable cell lines.
  • Utilize chemical and genetic tools (siRNA/ shRNA/ CRISPR) to dissect target function in relevant cell models.
  • Independently perform functional assays as needed to assess the biological activity of small molecules and/or large molecules such as antibodies.
  • Conduct secondary assays for prosecuting targets of interest in various biologically relevant (e.g., human tumor tissues) settings.
  • Perform rigorous testing of the developed methods and establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure that the quality of work is of the highest caliber

  • Strong scientific and hands-on experience using a wide range of cellular and molecular biology techniques, including tissue culture, cell line generation and maintenance, and use of gene perturbation techniques (siRNA/ shRNA, CRISPR-mediated genome editing). Experience with genetic modulation in primary cells and immune cells is highly desirable.
  • Experience in forwarding and reverse genetic screening followed by target validation studies to elucidate mechanisms is desirable.
  • Strong experience with molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid extraction and purification, DNA cloning, PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, and qPCR
  • Cell-based assay development and execution using a variety of techniques such as FRET, BRET, MSD, HTRF, ALPHALisa, Luminex, Flow cytometry-based readouts, and high content imaging
  • Proficiency in immune cell techniques such as isolation and enrichment of immune cells, immunophenotyping, and MLR is highly desirable.

  • Exceptional time management skills and ability to work well under pressure and drive projects under aggressive timelines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with high attention to detail, and outstanding organizational and documentation skills.
  • Strong interdisciplinary communication skills and continually pursuing self-improvement
  • Flexibility (tolerate changes in priorities/directions)

  • Ph.D. with 2-3 years or M.S. with 6+ years of experience in a biotechnology or pharmaceutical setting.
  • Candidates with a degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., molecular/cellular biology) and experience in Oncology disease drug discovery are preferred.
