Guidance, Navigation, and Controls Engineer

LeoStella - Seattle, WA

Guidance, Navigation, and Controls Engineer

Seattle-based LeoStella, a joint venture between Spaceflight Industries and Thales Alenia Space, is a state-of-the-art small satellite design and manufacturing company that is redefining how satellite constellations are built at scale. The company is pioneering revolutionary engineering and manufacturing processes from the ground up to accelerate the development and production while lowering the costs of small-sat constellations. By removing the barriers of building satellite constellations, LeoStella is helping organizations and markets change the world.

Position Description:

LeoStella requires an experienced, creative, and energetic GNC engineer to support the development of high-performance attitude control systems for satellite constellations. We need an exceptional individual contributor who enjoys working very closely with hardware in an agile and dynamic environment where schedules are critical.

As a GNC engineer at LeoStella, you will be responsible for the development of dynamic models for spacecraft motion, actuators, sensors, and environmental models like gravity, magnetic field, solar radiation, etc. You will develop, implement, and test attitude determination and control algorithms. You will participate in hardware development and procurement, working closely with suppliers to ensure attitude control hardware performs as needed to ensure the required system performance. You will also work closely with customers to support and maintain LeoStella spacecraft in orbit.

To be successful in this position, you will need to be passionate about delivering exceptional products that meet or exceed requirements and enable new capabilities for satellite performance. This passion will fuel your self-motivation to push tasks to ultimate completion. You will also need to enjoy working in a collaborative environment and work daily with engineers from multiple disciplines – systems, software, electrical, etc. You must be eager to receive and give peer feedback that enables our high performing team to be greater than the sum of its parts.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Participate in the definition and maturation of spacecraft system and attitude control subsystem requirements
  • Develop models for attitude control and sensing devices such as reaction wheels, thrusters, IMUs, star trackers, and sun sensors
  • Architect and execute characterization tests on actuators and sensors
  • Create 6 DOF simulations of spacecraft in Matlab/Simulink
  • Develop rigid and flexible spacecraft dynamic models
  • Develop and implement maintainable spacecraft attitude estimation and control algorithms
  • Generate, test, and verify Simulink autocode
  • Create and execute integrated hardware and system testing
  • Work closely with attitude control system hardware providers to provide technical oversight and review

Required Qualifications:

  • Master of Science or greater degree in Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Math, or a related field
  • 4+ years of experience in modeling and simulation of physical systems in Simulink/Matlab or similar applications
  • 2+ years of experience in spacecraft attitude determination and control
  • In-depth understanding of linear and non-linear dynamics, kinematics, and differential equations
  • Experience in linear control (required) and non-linear control (desired)
  • Experience with estimation techniques such as Kalman filtering
  • Basic understanding of astrodynamics and orbital mechanics
  • Basic knowledge of C programming language and practical experience in developing real-time systems in C for microcontroller or embedded Linux target is required
  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident) due to government regulation of the space industry

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with electrical and embedded systems design and test
  • Experience with requirements management tools (e.g. JAMA, DOORs, etc.)
  • Experience with software scheduling and tasking tools (e.g. Jira)
  • Familiarity with software version control systems (e.g. Git)

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
