Company Overview

Our client is a leader in natural gas construction in Western New York and expanding into the Ithaca, NY territory.  Overall, our client handles all aspects of gas work, including main line installation, service installation, meter and service upgrades, and renewals using techniques such as horizontal directional drilling and vacuum excavation.

Position Summary

The Gas Mechanic is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of natural gas mains and service lines, meter and service upgrades, and related gas infrastructure work. The role ensures safe, reliable delivery of natural gas and compliance with all safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

· Install, connect, and maintain natural gas mains and service lines, including trenching, directional drilling, pipe joining, and backfilling.

· Perform gas meter and service upgrades, installations, regulator setups, and service line connections.

· Locate underground utilities using locating equipment, maps, and as-built drawings.

· Conduct leak detection, pressure testing, purging, and system re-pressurization.

· Perform preventive maintenance on pipelines, valves, meters, and regulators.

· Respond to emergency calls, including leaks and third-party damages.

· Maintain accurate records, reports, sketches, and documentation.

· Operate vehicles, excavation/drilling equipment, tools, and safety equipment.

· Follow all safety protocols, regulations, and company procedures.

 

Required Qualifications

· Minimum 2 years of experience working with natural gas distribution systems or pipelines.

· NGA or relevant gas industry qualifications/certifications.

· High school diploma or GED preferred but not required

· Valid driver’s license with a clean record.

· Ability to read/interpret blueprints, maps, and utility drawings.

· Experience with leak detection tools, fusion tools, testing equipment, and locators.

· Strong safety awareness and understanding of regulatory standards.

· Ability to work outdoors in variable weather and perform physically demanding tasks.

· Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.

· Willingness to work on-call and respond to emergencies.

 

Work Conditions & Physical Demands

· Field-based work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

· Frequent physical exertion, including lifting, digging, climbing, kneeling, and working in confined spaces.

· Operation of motor vehicles, excavation equipment, and hand tools.

· Required use of PPE and adherence to safety protocols.

· Potential participation in on-call rotation for emergency response.
