As the System Administrator (Virtualization), you will support a VMWare virtualization infrastructure that supports the research community computing infrastructure. You will ensure effective capacity utilization and alert management. You will also manage day-to-day operations on virtualization infrastructure located in multiple locations. Additionally, you will:

  • Build ESXi hosts to established standards and create new policy templates
  • Manage the migration of guests to the platform through P2V, V2V (Hyper-V), and Inter Cluster migrations (on vSphere V7)
  • Respond to system alerts and event generated by VRealize Operations Manager, Nagios, and Splunk
  • Analyze capacity and operations management reports and create change requests to optimize system utilization
  • Migrate guests to cloud solutions
  • Manage Rancher Kubernetes clusters
  • Ensure efficient virtual networking configurations are created, in conjunction with the network team
  • Ensure efficient use of NetApp storage resources, in conjunction with the storage team
  • Maintain overall industry knowledge on latest trends, technology, etc.
  • Build Windows operating system servers
  • Build Linux operating system servers
  • Patch and upgrade Linux and Windows servers
  • Perform in-place migration upgrades of VMs and physical hardware

What You’ll Need to be Successful:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer related field with at least 3 years of virtualization and operating system experience OR Associate’s in arts degree in computer science with at least 5 years of experience
  • At least 2 years of experience with P2V migrations
  • At least 3 years of managing vCenter environments
  • At least 2 years of experience connecting and configuring NAS (clustered volumes)
  • At least 2 years of experience in virtual networking (VDS, NSX)
  • At least 3 years of experience responding to alerts and events related to virtualization
  • At least 2 years of experience with configuration management tools (SCCM, Puppet, CHEF)
  • At least 2 years of experience with monthly server patching
  • Ability to automate tasks and monitor their effectiveness
  • Proficiency in one or more scripting languages (PowerShell, Python, Bash)
  • Experience maintaining technical documentation using C4 model nomenclature and diagrams or similar

Great Additional Skills:

  • ITIL certification (v3 or newer)
  • Experience working in an economic research or academic environment
