The Director of Young Adult Initiatives will set and implement a vision and strategy for SHI NA’s rapidly growing work with emerging Jewish thought leaders ages 16 – 23. This professional will lead a team that will design and scale an educational throughline as well as targeted programming for 1000 exceptional High School, Gap Year, college, and post-college students, and provide them with the tools to develop as young Jewish leaders. With our educational content and our team of faculty, the Director of Young Adult Initiatives will serve as a key faculty member and in a pastoral capacity in helping emerging leaders wrestle with big questions. This professional will report to the Senior Vice President for National Initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Set the vision, strategy, and oversee implementation of programs that directly reach emerging Jewish thought leaders in high school, gap year, and college campuses - scaling to 1,000 per year (roughly ages 16-23);
  • Supervise staff working on the programs (currently two program coordinators);
  • Launch a major Hartman learning program for North American high school students in the fall of 2022 and oversee existing and new programs for college students;
  • Work with Hartman faculty to design educational arcs for all young adult programs utilizing the Institute’s iEngage curriculum, and serve as a key teacher to help students develop as Jewish thought leaders on the big questions facing North American Jewry;
  • Design, lead and oversee in-person pluralistic retreats, remote learning sessions, and potentially region-based in-person gatherings, mostly in North America and including some programming in Israel;
  • Oversee recruiting strategies for all programs, as well as for Hartman’s gap year program in Jerusalem, Hevruta;
  • Serve in a pastoral role to participants as they explore big questions personally and those facing the Jewish people;
  • Serve as part of a larger team with program directors reaching the day school field, Jewish education professionals, and the Hevruta gap year program;
  • Teach in other North American programs as appropriate;
  • Ensure that program offerings sustain supportive relationships with alumni, helping to connect young Jewish leaders to further Hartman offerings;
  • Work closely with our Digital Team to create scalable digital teen-facing content or other learning materials as needed.


  • Alignment with and passion for SHI’s mission and approach to Israel education
  • A Masters degree or higher in the field of Jewish learning and/or education (rabbinic ordination or PhD preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience
  • A proven track record of building, leading, and teaching at transformative learning experiences in informal and formal educational settings for young Jews ages 16-23
  • A solid understanding of the evolving educational and developmental needs of young Jews ages 16-23
  • Competency working with budgets and logistics (managing travel and in-person gatherings)
  • Ability to apply a strong growth-mindset in a research-based, fast-paced entrepreneurial team which responds to the evolving needs of the field
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and when to take initiative in identify problems and devising solutions
  • Good sense of humor
  • Ability to staff programs across the United States and in Israel
  • Preferably located in NY tri-state area or California Bay Area

Salary range and benefits

Estimated salary $140,000, commensurate with experience and location. Very competitive benefits package. SHI NA is an equal opportunity employer.
