System Adminsitrator/System Center Operation Management (SCOM) Engineer

Summit Technologies, Inc. is looking for a System Administrator/System Center Operation Management (SCOM) Engineer to join our team in Washington, D.C. The SCOM Engineer will provide support for our data centers that host core applications and infrastructure. This position is part of a team that tracks system performance using in-place monitoring tools, such as SCOM and vCenter, to support comprehensive monitoring and application performance. You must be a US citizen or a permanent US resident, as this is in support of a government contract and requires a Public Trust clearance. The schedule for this position is hybrid, you will work 2 days in the office and 3 days remote.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform administrative tasks from the System Center Operation Manager (SCOM) and Azure Application Insight consoles.
  • Provide application and infrastructure support for the SCOM/Azure platform and create and maintain monitoring and notification rules.
  • Review and update SCOM console security, apply patches, create SCOM console roles and reviews, and create and install custom Management Packs (MP) as needed.
  • Deliver SCOM views, create custom reports on results of SCOM monitoring, use SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) technologies, and provide problem resolution for SCOM components and related custom scripts.
  • Build Executive Dashboards via Web interfaces or other dashboards via PowerBI.
  • Identify application and infrastructure performance and scalability risks and mitigate risks in a timely manner.
  • Identify trends, implement new solutions/processes that fix issues, and continually strive toward moving from a reactive stance to a proactive stance.
  • Develop processes and tools that ensure that capabilities are effectively transitioned to Network Operations and Tier 2 teams, including the existence of adequate monitoring, and comprehensive playbooks for quick resolution of incidents.
  • Research and monitor current end-user response time as well as application, system performance and availability.
  • Ensure that applications deployed will properly scale and meet expected SLAs for Performance, Availability, Scalability and Stability.
  • Monitor and report for existing applications/systems and infrastructure.
  • Create automated solutions for data collection and reporting for existing applications and infrastructure for Performance and Availability.
  • Review and analyze Web Application Performance and end user experience (client-side browser profiling), utilizing a deep understanding of various monitoring tools.
  • Work with the application and infrastructure teams to set up Performance monitoring for the applications, databases, network and Cloud.
  • Implement effective monitoring solutions and assist in establishing the appropriate response to those events through processes and procedures, enabling level 1 and 2 teams to resolve as many issues as possible.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • At least 7 years of relevant SCOM experience.
  • Experience with the installation, configuration, and administration of Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2019.
  • Experience working in a Cloud-based system (Azure).
  • Experience with instrumenting agent based and network-based Application Performance Monitoring tools for performance and availability monitoring.
  • Knowledge and experience with Continuous Integration, Continuous Build, Continuous Deployment Practice, Tools, and trends.
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting engine to automate tasks with SCOM.
  • Experience with System Center Configuration Manager 2016-19, System Center Service Manager 2016-19 and System Center Orchestrator.
  • Experience with major Microsoft technologies including PC and server operating systems, Active Directory, Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server.
  • Knowledge of server virtualization technologies, preferably VMware and/or Microsoft Azure technologies.
  • Knowledge of multiple processor systems, RAID hardware, SCSI attached, and storage area network solutions.
  • Knowledge of data backup, replication and encryption technologies.
  • Knowledge of LAN/WAN network infrastructure technologies.
  • Knowledge of PowerShell HTTP, HTTPS, TCP/IP, SMTP, DNS, SSH, TELNET, SNMP and FTP.
  • Experience with Veritas NetBackup, Azure PaaS, IaaS, VMWare preferred.
  • Experience with Executive Dashboards preferred.
