COVID-19 Epidemiologist

The COVID-19 Epidemiologist performs COVID-19 surveillance to identify clusters/outbreaks, leads quality assurance efforts, provides operational support for data needs for other response branches, maintains data visualization systems, analyzes, interprets, and presents epidemiological data. In coordination with the Data & Surveillance Group Supervisor and Unit Leads, the COVID-19 Epidemiologist is responsible for conducting epidemiologic analysis, interpreting findings, and presenting learned knowledge through written and oral communications.

This position will assist senior Health Department epidemiologists in the design and development of study methodology relating to COVID-19 and will lead database management of epidemiology studies.

THE DUTIES INCLUDE RESPONSIBILITY FOR:

  • Case/cluster/outbreak surveillance of COVID-19 among Fairfax Health District residents and visitors
  • Effective use of electronic surveillance systems (e.g., VEDSS, SARA Alert) to provide routine surveillance updates/reports and perform routine quality assurance
  • The management of informatics projects to improve Health Department surveillance, case investigation, and outbreak management
  • Collaboration with others to develop audience-appropriate health communication messages and materials
  • The COVID-19 Epidemiologist maintains situational awareness of the Fairfax County Health Department COVID-19 public health response, provides epidemiologic support, and completes other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a master’s degree in Public Health (MPH) or Master of Science (MS) with graduate work in epidemiology and/or biostatistics plus two years of experience in epidemiology-related work

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze health data using statistical software (e.g., SAS, R)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

This is a temporary position in response to needs resulting from COVID-19. This position is designated as essential and is part of the County’s emergency response which operates seven days a week. The regular daily schedule is reporting onsite Monday to Friday 8:30-5:00 pm, however, an alternate schedule (e.g., Wednesday-Sunday) or occasional evening and weekend hours may be required. May occasionally start as early as 7:00 am or work as late as 9:30 pm based on service demand.
