Founded in Germany in 2016, tonies® is the creator of the Toniebox, a screen-free audio entertainment system for children that promotes imagination, independence, and active play. In just eight years, tonies has grown into a leading brand in children’s audio entertainment across Europe and North America. The company combines storytelling, music, and educational content through collectible figurines called Tonies, which, when placed on the Toniebox, play audio content wirelessly.

The Toniebox combines elements of gaming and audio streaming to deliver captivating storytelling with visual cues and creating an entire new category in children’s learning tools. The soft cube has a digital core which is intuitive and easy to use: the audio starts as soon as the “Tonie” audio character, such as The Gruffalo or Zog, are placed to the top of the “Toniebox” magnetic pad. The Toniebox and Tonies are suitable for children as young as one. The audio system is now available in nearly 100 countries with consumers overcoming significant barriers to purchase tonies. This phenomenon validates product/market fit for the brand as we continue to expand globally.

Tonies offers a wide range of content, including original stories, licensed titles (e.g. Disney, Sesame Street, PAW Patrol), and educational series. With a mission to foster creativity and reduce screen time for kids, tonies continues to expand its presence in homes, schools, and libraries around the world.

Headquartered in Dusseldorf with offices in Hamburg, Berlin, Schwäbisch Gmünd, London, Paris, tonies has over 300 employees and is now available at over 15,000 POS locations. The company has built a progressive culture that fosters high productivity and remote work while rapidly expanding their sales and global presence.

Over the last 18 months the US market has become a top priority with the hiring of Ginny McCormick, the former CMO of Zappos (ex Amazon, Hasbro).

FY 2024 Product and Company Overview

Job Overview:

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Chief Marketing Officer to lead our global marketing team and shape the strategic direction and the next level of growth of the business. The CMO will be responsible for overseeing global marketing initiatives, developing branding strategies and driving customer engagement. They will manage a global team of 20+ with direct reports for Global Brand, Growth, Creative and Product Marketing.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in consumer products, omnichannel retail, and a passion for innovative marketing. In addition, given Tonies’ unique content centric value proposition, this person needs to be a story teller with an appreciation for the power of community and the ability to leverage organic social and other channels to tell stories using innovative formats that inspire and connect with parents and children worldwide.

In addition, they must have the leadership experience to manage a global team remotely as well as the energy to inspire and the compassion to mentor. Success is building a dedicated, high performing team that is passionate and can deliver high quality outcomes at the speed that dynamic social and commerce channels now require.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement comprehensive marketing strategies that align with the company's vision and growth objectives, emphasizing data-driven decision-making and agile responses to market changes.

  • Brand Development: Enhance and evolve the tonies brand across all platforms, ensuring a consistent and compelling message that resonates with diverse consumer segments.

  • Consumer Content Strategy: Build a brand storytelling strategy that leverages nonconventional formats and channels to fuel commerce models that drive acquisition and LTV.

  • Omnichannel Marketing: Design and execute an integrated omnichannel marketing strategy that seamlessly connects the consumer experiences. This includes:

    • Cross-Channel Campaign Execution: Plan and oversee marketing campaigns across various platforms, including social, e-commerce media platforms, in-store experiences, and traditional media. Ensure messaging is cohesive and tailored to each channel's audience demographics and behaviors.

    • Customer Journey Mapping: Utilize consumer insights and analytics to map the customer journey across all touch points, identifying opportunities for personalization and engagement that inform targeted campaigns.

    • Local Enablement: Design go-to-market campaigns that maximize global efficiencies. Provide local marketing teams with a toolkit including strategies, content for multiple channels and retailer sell-in tools. Define global measurement and testing strategies to drive effectiveness at the local level.

  • Team Management: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing marketing team, fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and innovation. Implement training and development programs that enhance team skills.

  • Budget Management: Strategically allocate and manage the marketing budget, ensuring maximum ROI on all marketing activities. Leverage insights from data analytics to inform spending and resource allocation decisions.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with product, content and local marketing teams to ensure cohesive execution that accelerates commercial success.

Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of experience in marketing, with a proven track record in successful go to market strategies in consumer goods. Candidates must have led brands that delivered growth, across omnichannel retail. 5+ years in the leadership role of a global brand preferred. Family/kids marketing experience is ideal.

  • Strong expertise across multiple marketing disciplines including brand development, product marketing, growth marketing, social marketing (organic and paid), e-commerce strategies, and omnichannel marketing.

  • Ideally, candidates will have experience building content to commerce brands i.e. using compelling longer format storytelling that builds consumer loyalty and leads to product sales growth via DTC, e-store and POS distribution.

  • Proven leadership skills with extensive experience in managing and developing high-performing teams across the globe.

  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to inspire and influence at all levels of the organization.

  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical abilities, capable of interpreting complex data and translating insights into actionable strategies.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration, or a related field; MBA preferred.

 

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation:

This role offers a highly competitive compensation package totalling USD $400-500k and comprised of a base salary, an annual cash bonus incentive and LTI/equity in the form of an annual RSU Grant.
