About the Role

The Curriculum Development Editor is responsible for developing custom webtexts and effectively managing the development process. Leading this process requires a deep understanding of both the content itself and the challenges of teaching a general education course to non-majors. Overall responsibilities include content analysis, learning strategy design, course mapping, the composition of content, questions, and assessments, project management, and ongoing analysis of student performance and faculty support. In this role, you will give special attention to the needs of online and at-risk learners who benefit greatly from the inclusion of student success elements and frequent self-checks.

Your goal is to ensure every student who completes the work succeeds in the course. Our ideal candidate is a learning designer at heart - constantly thinking about the goal for student learning and how can we more clearly focus the learning experience around it. In addition, you must be a strong, experienced writer who creates clear, engaging questions and content.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree required, Master’s or PhD preferred

  • Minimum Experience: 3 years’ experience in development editing or instructional design within education

Position Responsibilities

  1. Content Creation

    • Research and analyze discipline topics, skills, learning objectives, and pedagogical challenges

    • Effectively guide and collaborate with partner faculty and colleagues throughout the development and revision process

    • Generate potential solutions, compare promising approaches, choose strategies to prototype or sketch to productively guide the learning strategy development process

    • Curate and acquire remarkable, well-aligned text, illustration, and video resources

    • Produce new works of writing, illustration, or video as needed

    • Composition of pedagogically effective questions, in a variety of formats, to help students attend to key points, scaffold learning, and support metacognition

    • Rigorously align content, questions, and assessments with desired outcomes and purpose

    • Project management of development of new content, features, and courses

    • Coordination with Soomo teams including Student Support, Sales, Software Development, Design, Production, and Permissions

  2. Courseware Support

    • Analysis of student performance and institutional needs

    • Ongoing revision of assigned webtexts as a whole, and as tailored at specific schools

    • Demonstrations, training, and support for faculty

    • Development of training materials for students and faculty

Desired Skills and Attributes

  • Desire to facilitate student learning in an online environment

  • Strong copyediting skills with experience conforming to editorial and style standards

  • Working knowledge of learning theories, instructional practices, and instructional design models

  • Experience engaging in a design thinking process including paying careful attention to the problem to solve and root issues

  • Experience writing measurable learning outcomes and aligned question sets, activities, and assessments

  • A willingness to manage all aspects of the webtext development and improvement process informed by the experience we’ve gained over the last 10 years in how to build exceptional courseware

  • A sense of what makes writing or video accessible and engaging as well as academically rigorous

  • The ability to engage with statistics to analyze student usage patterns and an inquisitive spirit for finding anomalies and chasing down explanations

  • A willingness to work with faculty at many institutions who are new to active learning courseware and data-driven intervention

  • Demonstrated ability to produce error-free work in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Exceptional attention to detail

  • Strong technical skills using software such as Word, Pages, and Excel and some familiarity with HTML

  • A willingness to learn new technologies and incorporate new skills and knowledge into daily work

  • A willingness to ask questions

Bonus points if you have:

  • Insight into where students struggle in intro-level general education courses, why they struggle, and ideas for how to help

  • A solid understanding of mathematics, business, and social science topics at the introductory college level
